Sorry if this is dumb but can someone tell me what effaced means and how you know if you are or not?

Don't feel stupid this is my 4th pregnancy and I'm still learning things about pregnancy lol the dilation is the opening of the cervix and the effacement is the thinning of the cervix for your baby to be able to come out smoothly.
effaced is the thinning of your cervix. you won't be able to tell if you are effaced or not unless your dr or midwife checks you internally.
