Twins...Wow

We just found out today that we are having twins.  I was very excited to see the TWO heartbeats.  My reason for going to the doc was horrible cramps.  I am 6 weeks gone.  I am not sure what is causing them since the doc said everything was good.  Is this something common with twin pregnancies?  I have had a previous miscarriage and no other pregnancies.  I am worried.  Thanks for any help you can give.

Congrats!!  I also had a lot of cramping in the first 8-9 weeks of my twin pregnancy.  So bad that I recall one day I snuck out of work to go sit in my car for like 30 min until it passed.  All turned out fine though, I think it was just rapid stretching.  I never had that sort of feeling with my singleton pregnancy.

Btw, I'm kat and have 22 month old b/g twins and an almost 4 yr old daughter.  Feel free to ask me any questions.  Best wishes to you for a healthy pregnancy!

just think of this your uterus is having to stretch to fit two this time so it's gonna feel very different than just one

Congrats on the news of your twinkies! I never had cramps with either of my pregnancies but I have seen on the boards that many women do. Like 35MomOfBoys said, it is awesome to see the heartbeats.

Like 35MomOfBoys said, you will definitely worry most of the time with the pregnancy. This forum has been awesome so please let us know what we can do/answer for you to help : )

My best advice for you...Take it easy from day 1. Never overdo it even though you may feel great. Since it is considered a high risk pregnancy and many pregnant women pregnant with twins or HOM (higher order multiples) often go on bed rest, taking it easy is the best way to avoid or at least deter any problems. Your blood volume will double with a twin pregnancy vs. 50% for a singleton so you will be more susceptible to lightheadedness (especially in a warm shower - blood vessels constrict).

Oh yeah, and drink PLENTY of water from day 1 too. If you are anything like I was, I couldn't get enough water. It is great for you, the babies and it helps to avoid PTL (preterm labor).

Please send me messages if you need another mom of twins' advice : )

You'll probably worry most of the time with this pregnancy.  (I do it still, at 18 weeks!) Try your best not to, though.  I had some light spotting at 8 weeks, which scared the heck out of me.  But the dr confirmed that everything looked just as it should, and the spotting was minimal then stopped.  It's hard not to worry anytime you have a pregnancy that's labled "high risk," like twin pregnancies are.  But on a more positive note, once you've seen heartbeats, the m/c risks go way down, to like 5% (which is nothing!) and once you reach 8 weeks, the risk goes down even farther, like 2%.

Congrats!  Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months.

congratulations on your twins.

I didn't/don't have any cramps at all during pregnancy with my single baby or with my twins.
