Hi!
It is common for women to have an "off" cycle every now and then. What happens is that the ovaries "miss fire" or fail to ovulate. If no ovulation occurs, no progesterone is produced and the uterine lining just keeps growing. Eventually it will become so thick that it will slough on its own. When it does, it is frequently heavier than a normal period.
If you were my patient, I would repeat the pregnancy test with a blood test, and if that was also negative, I would prescribe 5 days of progesterone to "get the ball rolling" and start the period.
One other possibiity is that you may have a hormone producing cyst on your ovary. Sometimes a cyst can produce hormones that prolong the cycle until the cyst eventually regresses or ruptures.
It is common for this to happen occassionally, but if it becomes a frequent issue, you should definitely see your MD!
Good luck!

hey, i went through the same thing last month. i totally skipped am entire month! which is soooo not normal for me. i have never missed my period in my life. so i went to the doc and she gave me some pills called prometrium. it is a progesterone pill designed create a better envrionment for ttc and/or regulate your cycle so that you can get back on track. if you are pregnant the pill will just help your pregnancy progress, but if not you will start your period. i took it for 10 days and started my period about 5 days after i stopped taking them. nowim hoping the meds will give me an extra boost for this month. anyway, i just wante dto let you know that you are not alone. there are tons of women that end up actually being pregnant and just not have enough hcg levels to show up on a test. you should go to the doc and get a blood test done and tell her about that pill. good luck and keep us informed :)
thank you guys i will be going back and mentioning these things to my GP you were a great help :)
