Hi!
If you were my patient, I would advise you that 40lb weight gain for the entire pregnancy is adequate. Usually most of the weight is gaining in the final trimester. So, your providers are correct to mention the weight gain to you. You may feel swollen, and you probably are retaining water, but much of the weight is probably NOT water. Unfortunately! One bit of advice for reducing swelling is to go swimming or soak in a bathtub. This will help to bring the fluid back into your circulation and then out your kidneys. It is only a temporary fix, but you can do it every day.
Good luck!

Dang this post makes feel better about my weight gain. So far I have gained 31 lbs and I'm 30 weeks. I feel like a whale and I was walking everyday for 30 minutes but got lazy and stopped. My diet is not that great either so you're definitely not alone.
Dont Feel bad i can completly relate im 22 weeks and have gained over 35 pounds already so dont feel alone because Your Not Trust Me just REMEMBER to its Nothing You cant loose after You Deliver :)
Swelling is often a sign of not getting enough protein So if your diet is high in grains and starches, it might be worth trying to exchange some for higher protien to take some of that swelling down. Good luck!
I gained 60lbs with my first pregnancy, ask your doctor if there is anything you can do to help you retain less water...if you aren't already watch your sodium intake, but dont stress yourself it'll just make it worse.
