Anyone that works at a hospital or in the med field in general please help!

To anyone that works in the medical field, I was just interested in your education leading up to the job. I know I want to go into the medical field...but I can't really handle a lot of gore! I know i am not cut out to be a CNA but I don't want to go to school forever either...I want to make good money with a decent schedule. I remember there being a lady on here that sits at the front desk and registers people that come in? I wouldn't mind that! If you all don't mind sharing some of your backgrounds with this anyways...if you don't feel comfortable I understand. I am really looking forward to going back to school and getting the heck out of the job I have! So any education, training, internship...anything will be helpful! Any suggestions as well! thanks ladies!

agomez- I thought HUC was a fancy name for nurse?? I dont know how it works!! lol now Im confused.. because at the hospital I work at we have a HUC in every department.. But we are still the one that gets to do most of the paperwork and stuff like that.. Do they just keep track of the patients charts and stuff like that?? I think it would be cool to be a HUC.

I am an EMT and work in the ER. I love what I do. I love the PFS (registration) people too... I love working in the ER because I learn SO much!! Of course we don't deal with long term care, but I know what to do if my kids get sick or get a fever and I will not be nervous at all with a newbaby...
I had to go to school for one semester for my EMT training as well as clinicals in an ER and with the ambulances. I make more money in the hospital than I would in the rescue on the streets... One of our techs changed from the patient care side to PFSand loves it... There is also a HUC, or the secretary in the ER. This person sits at the desk and answers the phone, makes Dr. call outs, and puts lab and radiology orders into the computer. If you are good with a computer it is a good position... That position doesnt require any school as far as I know! Oh and there is a HUC on every floor not just the ER...

Good luck with whatever you choose...

wow MJ thanks alot for all of your information. That is definately something I would be interested in! Although right now I am looking into becomming a vet tech that would definately be second to that plan if it fell through. Thats a good amount of money to me..a satisfying amount at least.

honey- thanks for the info, I was looking at that as well. It would be about 8 or 9 months for the program for me (depending on day or night classes) They all interest me though. Thanks for your info!

nursekim- if you wouldn't mind, could you give me a generalized idea on how much I would make if I did get my bachelors like you did?

Yep its me I register patients.. It pays $13.35 where I work starting.. Oppurtunities for advancement, anual reviews with a 5% raise as long as you attend the meetings and seminars involved in the job.  My insurance coverage is 90% I pay a 250 dollar deductable for myself (single insurance.) umm.. I also get a 50% in network discount when I visit this hospital for my visits, which is nice because it has a clinic attatched.  So I get 50% discount on all of my clinic visits with my doctor.  I work "second shift" which my hours are 11am-7pm and I only have 3 assigned days a week.  But where I work our boss emails out "open hours" I work about 42 hours a week at the hospital.  I have 24 "assigned hours" a week meaning that I HAVE to work 24 hours for my insurance to cover me.

Now what I do.  We have names for the different departments that we work in.  They are POS (point of service) 1, 2, 3, and 4.. 1 for first floor, 2 for second floor, and so on.  These are the "central desks" or the desks that patients see when they come into the hospital.  I also work in the ED (emergency department) registering (verifying patient information and taking insurance copies.), and reception (the desk that you check in at when you enter the emergency room.) and last but not least there is CORE or basically general registration.  What core does is when we find out that patients are being transferred to our hospital from another location we will "pre admit" them so that they are in the system.  We print a facesheet (that has all the patients information, address, phone number, employer, insurance information, etc.) labels (to label all the patients paperwork) and a patient wristband.  Once the patient arrives at the hospital, we go to their room and we have the patient sign a general consent allowing us to treat them and bill insurance, label it and leave it with the HUC (or head nurse.) We also verify the patients information and put a wrist band on them and make copies of their insurance cards.  After that we go back to our desk and update the patients information in the system.

We also get calls from nurses to change patient types from observation (being monitored) to inpatient (staying at the hospital)
We admit newborns into the system when they are born.  We go in and put in the baby's name and birth time and then it puts them into the general system.
Hmm.. We get to take a lot of strange calls.. lol today I took a call from a lady that wanted to know if her fiance could stay in her room while she stayed in our hospital.  Theres other odds and ends jobs that we do also but it usually depends on the day for that.  With my assigned hours "giving breaks" is part of my day.. Which is why I posted about the POS's and the ED.  When I give breaks I go to POS 2 and 4 and the ED reception and registration and basically "fill in" while that person goes to lunch.  So I do a lot of running, but its really no blood and guts.  Sometimes some stinky patients, and sometimes it gets a little emotional but I love my job.  Most hospitals will have postings available online.

I didn't need to go to college for my job but I was signed up  to start college in fall which is now getting pushed back to spring because of the baby.  Another cool part about my job is that when I do go to school I can still work here and they will work around my school schedule.  After I finish my schooling as long as it is in the medical field they will pay for all of my schooling.  (Im planning on going to school for OB nursing.) well Sorry if this is really long.. but just figured Id sum up my job, how much it pays, benefits, and anything you were wondering.  I would definantly recommend searching online for a hospital near you with openings in "patient registration" or "patient access representative" openings.  Good luck!

I am a RN.  I spent 4 and a half years working on my Bachelors degree.  Yes the school time was long and intensive but I only work 3 days a week and that is full time.  So I get to stay home 4 days a week.  And the best part is I can support myself and my children by myself if the need ever arises, I don't have to depend on anybody else.

I was looking into that Medical Billing and Coding...but it just doesn't sound very interesting to me. I wouldn't mind be a medical assistant. I may do that or be a vet assistant. That to me sounds great! And I believe you are right that it was mj_mommy...I was going to message her but I would have felt dumb if it wasn't her lol

I am a CNA and i had to stop working because i slipped a disc in my back and now i cant do that work anymore. But you can also do a med aid which only takes about 3 months to get your license. Also there is a Medical Assitant which takes 6 months thats when you can work in the docs office. Then there is medical billing and coding which here in texas you can do without going to school for. So there is a lot you can do when it comes to being in the medical field.
