i tired finding something for at home work so i could stay with the boys and i couldn't find anything i liked...or wasn't going to charge me $500 to start up...blah. which i'm actually starting to interview for jobs....GASP!!!! i don't know what i'm gonna do being away from my precious little goober butts all day!!!!!! i'm so gonna cry and cry and just miss them.
anyways...my mom and i are starting a little side business. on the web of course. we're both semi crafty people so we're making a "down home" type webstore with the stuff we make. wreaths, knittings, baby clothes (my mom is amazing with a sewing machine) and other holiday related stuff we do. hopefully if it gets big enough we'll both be able to quit our jobs. lol.
Thanks ladies. I appreciate all the advice and ifo. I will definitely do some checking. I am even considering going back to school once I cant bring McKenzi to work with me anymore, I mean if I have to put her in daycare I might as well make the best of it and get my education that I wanted to do years ago. Just not sure what I want to major in yet. I have been doing some looking into that as well. So, by next fall I may be back in school. We will see.
I have been in training for this and it is very involved. Had I not possessed prior medical knowledge and training, this would be much, much harder. I spend several hours a night transcribing and researching. In the beginning 2 minute dictations can and do take an hour or more. I think this is something you really have to think about as it is not as easy as people may believe. I know I never anticipated this to be as tough as it is, but I am aware now.
There are programs that will allow you to complete in a shorter amount of time, but you will likely not find a job afterward. You need to research and find a program that is respected enough by employers to get them to waive the standard 2 year experience requirement.
I am going through a local college which utilizes one of the major programs in the country and supplements with their own material. It is considered to be a great program. All of my instructors are experienced transcribers and members of the AHDI.
And the pay on the outset is not that great, but with persistence and dedication, that can be improved upon fairly quickly.
The cost for these programs is several thousand dollars, so consider that as well. You may qualify for some financial aid, but it is unlikely to cover 100% of the cost.
Peek, that's sooooooo true. Plus transcribing takes up a lot of your time. The pay is really good, in my opinion. I thought about doing it at one point but decided to do jewelry instead. You have to learn a lot of medical lingo and you'd have medical textbooks and pharmaceutical books on hand at all times so you don't misspell medications.
I think you can even get the certificate in transcribing in as little as 6 months. That will really depend on the schools, etc. hopefulmommy2007, if you want more specific information on that I can talk to my SIL about it for you or give her your email address.
Medical transcription training is about 8 or 9 months in length, I think. Its pretty involved.
Definately do-able, but not simple by any means.
I know a woman who works from home as an insurance person. The company gave her all the equipment she'd need and she has a headset and answers customer service questions and gets insurance policies going.
Also, one of my brother's ex-wives was a medical transcriptionist from home. You'd have to do a few hours of some schooling to qualify but whatever company you work through will also help you get the equipment you'd need (computer, programs, foot pedal, diction thing, head set). Basically doctors send you recorded tapes of them evaluating patients and you type up what they say on the tapes.
There are some customer service jobs that you can do from home and even administrative jobs.
If you know other languages you can do translations. If you know how to make websites you can do that for some small bussinesses. Make wedding invitations, if you don't have pets you could do a catering thing at home for bussiness lunches or breakfasts. I think that there's plenty of things that you could do but it takes some investing and motivation.
i just signed up fo a job making pen pets it looks pretty simple i paid 45.00 for the start up fee the website is ****.***..........will see if its actully simple or hard dont know yet just orderd today
thank you Joy. I appreciate it. Any others out there would be a great help too. Ill do some online searching over the weekend.
Well with any at-home job there are startup costs. So if you have a few hundred you can start with then you'll be good to get started. It can take some time to make an income from it, too. I make jewelry and sell it online. I spent quite a bit getting started up but I use sterling silver. Just going to Hobby Lobby and getting some items to start with can help.
If you're a crafty person there's a ton you could do:
-pottery
-jewelry
-sewing/felt/fabrics/crochet/knit
-graphic design
-soaps
-candles
