I found out i was 4 weeks pregnant on Sept.04,2007 my hcg level was 138,i had a dull constant pain in my lower left ovary area and i went to the ER and it was considered a threatened miscarriage but the doctor said it was normal for me to bleed and pains from uterus stretching,i was sent next day for blood hcg level again and it was 166,then two days later another blood hcg count was 104,i started to bleed and have sharper pains that was coming like every minute that lasted about 6 hours, then 48 hours later my hcg level was 98 then three days later it was 95,then 1 week later it was 4 so my question is could i still be pregnant because they say i am miscarring but i still feel pregnant and i never not once was gave an ultrasound?please help me,what are the chances i can still be prego?also i am still having soft aches in my left side of my stomach, also,i only passed one stringy clot if that is what it was,the ob/gyn examined me and said he believed that i was miscarring, but can he be wrong?why do i still fell like this?the ob/gyn said that my hcg level was at 0 now, please help

A couple of weeks ago I found out I am pregnant. This past Sunday
10/14/07 I went to the ER cause I woke up having really sharp abdominal
pain. They said that the only thing they saw was a gestational sac of 5 wks.
But no Fetal pole my HCG was 6600 I have to go back and get more blood
work done next Monday. Should I worry I got a little scared when they said
there was no fetal pole. They could not find out where my pain is coming from
so that's another reason I am a little scared.

Hello,

If your hCG levels fell to less than assay you are not pregnant.  It is possible you had a miscarriage or you could have had an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside of the uterus, most commonly found in the fallopian tube) that has spontaneously resolved.  At my institution a woman in your situation would have undergone an ultrasound.  However, at you hCG levels it would have been too early to see a normal pregnancy in the uterus.  One might have seen findings suggestive of a miscarriage in progress or an ectopic pregnancy.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
