I'm totally in favor of the crib.  The issue with a play pen is twofold.  First, it is so deep that you have to go way down low to put the baby in which can be really inconvenient when they are drifting off to sleep.  The bassinet on top only is used a short time safely.  The other issue is that the mattress is quite thin.  It's not very comfortable.

If you want to cosleep, that's something a lot of people do.  I never did because I felt like I needed my space and baby needs theirs.  I spent/spend so much time with my children that I wanted to have some space to sleep.  Some space for my husband and I to be a couple.  And, I'm a light sleeper.  it wouldn't have worked for me to cosleep.  But I have friends who do.  The only issue is when you are finished wanting to sleep with them, they often don't think they want to give that up and it is a hard transition.

The crib was something I used a lot.  That's my take on the question.  good luck

I plan on getting a crib. I want my son to be able to sleep on his own and not need to sleep with me in order to sleep at all. It's cute when they are little bit can be harder to handle as they get older. I plan on getting a pack and play so that when he's at his fathers or if anyone ever babysits he can nap or even sleep in for the night but majority of the time I plan on him sleeping in a crib

You don't need a crib in the beginning at least.  Newborns usually sleep in a bassinet better because they're used to a more snug space. As they get older you'll need a crib or someplace bigger for baby to sleep. We had a bassinet and got a convertible crib for our first that turned into a toddler bed. I recommend that over a pack n play just because it's been a lot more useful and it doesn't kill your back like laying him in the pack n play did. But it's up to you. If you'd rather get a pck n play/ bassinet combo or whatever it's still safe and can work.

Some people don't have a crap ton of money to spend on cribs ... my baby is going to be sleeping in a rock n play sleeper for a fee months then I'll start thinking about a crib

You can always buy a playpen mattress so they aren't laying on the cardboard bottom.

I have a crib and pack n play.  For the first couple nights I'm going to use the bassinet on the pack n play cause it's closer to my bed.
I went to walmart the other night and they don't have a whole lot of cribs on their shelves and they told me reason being is mom's aren't buying cribs as much, they're using pack n plays cause it's cheaper.

I have both a crib and a pack n play with the bassinet thing and he slept way way better in hus crib.  It was the only time I could get him to sleep longer than 1 hour.

My son had a crib and this baby will too. I don't think the barely padded cardboard mattresses in playpens are supportive enough or comfortable enough for a baby to be sleeping on every night.
Families who are strictly bedsharing might not need cribs. But otherwise I personally think having a crib is a good idea.
