pregnant on the pill

I was taking my birthcontrol (Tricyclen) regularly but only missed one pill and took it later the next day with my other pill. I found out I was pregnant because I was 4 days late and took 2 tests. How odd is this? My husband thinks that I wasn't taking my medicine.

Hello,

To maximize the efficacy of the pill to prevent pregnancy a woman should maintain perfect use, meaning taking the pill at the same time everyday with no missed pills.  This will result in a 99% effectiveness at preventing pregnancy.  Routine or usual use of the pill (i.e., occasional missed pills, etc) lowers that rate to 90-92%.  So no, I don't think what happened to you is odd.

Best wishes,

Dr. Downing

Thank you that gives me some questions to ask the doctor when I go next week. It's just frustrating when your spouse thinks you're "trying to have a baby" when I really wasn't.

Well, considering I have a friend that got pregnant not once but THREE times on the Depo shot...I think anything is possible. The pill is not always 100% effective. Especially in people that are very fertile. According to my mom she got pregnant with me the day after she stopped her pill. So...anything is possible. Tell your husband to research the pill or ask a doctor about the pill to find out more info on how effective it can and cant be....maybe he will believe you when you tell him you only missed one pill.
