Pre mature birth long term effects

My son was born at 28 weeks about 11 years ago, but since he was little he has always been somewhat sensitive to the touch, such as when he gets hit from playing sports or even to the slightest movements such as running my hand through his hair from the neck up toward his forehead...could the pre mature birth have caused him to have sensitivity in his nerves?  Not sure if I am asking the questions correctly or not...hope anyone can help. Thanks!

What you are describing is what is called a sensory processing problem. There are many, many different types. My son hates light touches, hates having his head, hair, or mouth touched. (haircuts and hair brushing are a nightmare!!!) But there are many issues with noises, even just certain pitches (my son loves yelling and music, but cries and covers his ears if I vacuum or if he is in a shopping cart on cement. Doesn't care in the store but as soon as we hit the parking lot, his hands are over his ears) Also certain textures can upset someone with a sensory processing problem and lights can also. Starting some sensory integration therapy with an occupational therapist does wonders! (completely speaking from experience) I would describe all of your son's particular sensory discomforts to his doctor and mention that you are interested in occupational therapy and see what he/she thinks. Good luck!

My son was born at 25 weeks 10 years ago and he is very sensitive to touch and noise, i never thought it had anything to do with being prem until now.

I believe the answer is yes, my baby was born at 31 weeks and every time she would hear loud noises and get scared she would jump. The doctors say that when they are born premature there nerves are as well, so that would be why he is so sensitive. Not all preemies have a problem with there nerves later in life but some do.
