PSA test question

The result of my PSA last week was 6.3 an increase from 3.8  5 years ago. I'm 61 and have no family history of any type of cancer (except lung cancer in a heavy smoking aunt). I'm scheduled to see a urloogist next week - what are the likely suggestions / test options

I've read that exercise, bicycle riding, sexual activity within 48 hours of  testing and  even the digital exam will temporarily raise the PSA level. A declining  PSA level is better than the alternative.

Thanks for your response - had first visit and after exam showed nothing from "feel" and I inquired about the effect of heavy exercise and sexual activity 24 hrs prior to the last PSA we decided to do another PSA test that day. Got reults back and it was 5.3 instaed of the 6.3 before. I've read where in cancer cases this number should never go down and a "bouncing" number is more likely age and activity related. Have another consult with the doctor in 2 weeks.
Thanks for your comments .

My PSA went up over a 5 year period to max out at 6.5...  Digital exams show minor inflammation and no lumps... otherwise no other symptoms...   I have decided that at this point in my life watchful waiting is best for me.  A good book to read---  the invasion of the prostate snatchers... great read for a balanced picture of what to do......

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005 my psa was 4.5... it had gradually increased from 2.5 over a period of about 18months.  I had a biopsy and it revealed that I had prostate cancer.  I was treated with Proton Radiation at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif. While having my treatments I met several men with prostate cancer and noticed that the key to early detection was having  a biopsy as soon as it started increasing. I met guys there who had prostate cancer with a psa of 3.00 ... The increase is the key... In my opinion the 6.3 doesnt necessarily mean you have prostate cancer but its a darn good reason to have a biopsy.  I will add that when I had my biopsy, the doctor didnt give me any kind of anesthesia... only way i can describe it is that it hurt...lots... Id insist on something for pain if i were you in case you do have a biopsy.  I will add that since having my treatments my PSA is .01 and I have no side effects of any kind.  If it does turn out that you have a problem and would like to discuss my experience with me or my treatments, please send me a message.  I will be glad to share any informtion with you... Best Regards....Claytex
