psa ,normal levels?

hi ,im new here,..im 59 yrs old,...i have had quite regular health checks,..i just got the results for my last weeks blood test,.. liver normal ,..glucos normal,  cholesteral very good,...and to the point ,..psa,.overall .5.1  doctor says we need to keep an eye on the level,...i have no symptons associated with prostate problems,.should i be worried ? is this above normal levels? thank you, ted.

My husband had a PSA around 4. and he did not wait too long (some antibiotics) more PSA's etc before having a biopsy.  Don't ask them if you need a biopsy...tell them you want a biopsy....it's really no big deal and can save your life.  My husband had cancer and did a laproscopic robotic RP at the Cleveland Clinic.(3 hrs dirive for us but the best)  Be your own best advocate and find the best doctor at the best hospital.  The biopsy can be done by any local urologist.  By the way my husband had no symptoms at all.  Good luck.  He also had a gleason score of 7 with that low 4 PSA.  He's 56 1/2 now and had surgery at 53.

Something that should also be performed is the free PSA test, this is basically a grey zone between 4-10, and before a biopsy, your clinician might be interested in checking a free PSA which could give some indication of possible malignancy.

Being a 59 year old male with good blood work is good, however the PSA is mildy elevated. Your clinician likely performed a digital rectal examination as well and did not find anything pathological which is why he/she recommended following the PSA. Generally the accepted normal values are as high as 4.0, different clinicians handle these problems differently. You can suggest performing a biopsy to determine if the PSA is a result of malignancy, but that is up to your clinician, the best thing for you to do would just be to ask them if you need a biopsy?
