Anemia?

by lisarizz, Oct 08, 2009 12:18PM
Hey all,

My Dr.. just called me with my blood results and wants me to see a hematologist. She said my My iron level count, 8 my serum iron 26.. Before I could ask any questions she put me through to the receptionist for an appointment to see a hematologist..

I am wanting to know.. what could this mean? What is a normal Serum Iron Level? and if they are both low what is that?

Also is it treatable? If so how?

Please help.. I dont know if I can stand waiting 2 weeks to see this specialist ..

Thanks so much!!!

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
The normal serum iron is: 60-170 mcg/dL, so 26 is on low side. The other value must be hemoglobin where 8 is again pretty low (on an average the normal values in male: 13 to 17 gm/dL, female: 12 to 15 gm/dL).
To assess a patient’s iron status, measurements of iron, TIBC (total iron binding capacity) and measurement of ferritin are performed. Transferrin is a substance that transports iron in the plasma. If the saturation is below 20%, the amount of iron carried by transferrin is decreased. In this situation it is also expected that the absolute serum iron will be low. Normally in iron deficiency, iron is low, TIBC is high, percent saturation is low and ferritin is low. The iron can be low due to poor diet or due to inability of gut to absorb iron as seen in malabsorption syndromes, IBS etc.
The condition is treatable. Apart from supplementing iron, an effort is made to eliminate the cause.
Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
