BRIC

Hi
I have been diagnosed with BRIC (Benign Recurrent Intrahepatic Cholestasis), I have been told it is a very rare disease and there are less than 100 people in the world with this disease.
I was just curious if anyone else has heard of this, or knows anyone who has it?
It is a genetic disease of the liver.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,
How are you? Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) is indeed a rare form of hereditary cholestasis syndrome. It is often characterized by repeated self limited episodes of pruritus and jaundice. It recurs but occasionally leads to progressive liver disease. The key to treatment is relief of symptoms and the pruritus. Plasmapheresis or MARS (Molecular Adsorbents Recirculation System) can be considered in refractory cases while liver transplantation can be indicated for intractable pruritus especially  if it progresses to progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis. Take care and do keep us posted.

Hi,

I also have been diagnosed with this condition. I cant find much information on the illness and am currently seeing a specialist in Sydney Australia. I am amazed that I have found someone else with this disease, its very rare!

Would like to hear more about how you are getting on and to hear more about the condition itself.

Regards

Jen
