tram flap blood transfusions

Hello,
Could anyone tell me what the chances are of needing a blood transfusion or any kind of blood for this surgery?
Thank you, Cathy

I would say that around 50% of reconstructive surgeons do a type and cross for possible transfusion. In most instances, for a pedicled flap, blood is not needed, and it is the same for free flaps. You have around a 20% chance of transfusion. Simply ask your surgeon and get some of your own blood stored if you are concerned.

This would be best answered if you would post on the Reconstructive Surgery forum. A plastic Surgeon answers questions there. As a rule if blood may be required for any surgery you are asked to donate your own before surgery.    Regards .....
