Relationships and Hepatitis B

Hi,

I'm a virgin and I recently started dating a close friend. My friend was born with Hepatitis B, passed down to him by his father. As a recent refugee from Asia his father was unaware of the 12-hour vaccination that could have been administered. I am aware of my boyfriend's condition and we both have considered participating in safe sex. Although, I am very afraid of the consequences. So if I do decide to participate in intercourse with him what are the chances that I will be infected with HBV? Do you have any suggestions for me in this situation?

Dear vGirl,

At the very least, take your question to a Sexuality Expert Forum on Medhelp. You will find the advice you need there. This forum, here, is for questions about the relationship, not sexual questions per se.

And I agree, be very careful!

Sincerely,

Dr. P.

It is a big risk to take.
You can catch HBV through saliva containing DNA. This would be most likely if he had a cut in his mouth.
I can be caught through unprotected sex, even though 30% of cases in adults do not have an identifiable risk factor, meaning that they do not know how and where they got it.
The only advice I could leave you with is to be very very careful.
I would consult a doctor in person before any decisions are made.

Premarital sex is fine, but given the circumstances of you relationship, there is much more to think about.
If you are willing to risk catching HBV with this guy, just be sure that you are going to be with him for a long time.
Don't do it just because you have the big urge, which everyone gets.
You need to be thinking long term here, and I can't stress it enough, meet with a doctor.
They are there for these reasons.
