How Long 'til I Get Better!? Help!

by LoriJade, Sep 10, 2007 07:11AM
Hi
I have had a productive cough (whitish/sometimes green phlegm) with nasal congestion, wheezing and some mild chest pain for 4 weeks now.
I am generally fit and healthy, so I was worried when, after 2 1/2 weeks of having these symptoms, the problem had not cleared up of it's own accord.
I went to the doctor, who, after listening to my chest etc, advised I may have bronchitis, and put me on a course of Amoxicillin (500mg).
I am not running a fever, and do not feel overly 'ill' (i.e apart from a general feeling of malaise, and not feeling '100%', I am able to make it into work and pretty much function as normal), but I am worried about the amount of time it's taking me to get back to normal!
As I said, I have always been pretty healthy, and my immune system can usually deal with something like this no problem.
Any ideas on how long an illness like this should/can last? 4 weeks seems ludicrous to me!
Anything else I can do other than rest, drink plenty of fluids, eat healthily, avoid smoking (all of which I am doing already), that can speed up my recovery?
I am getting pretty fed up with feeling like this, and in all honesty, I am starting to worry there's something seriously wrong! (although I'm sure if it was pneumonia, I would feel a heck of a lot worse than I do!)
Thanks for your help in advance.

I hear you. It started with a bad sore throat, I went to the doctor and she diagnosed bronchitis with some antibiotics. The cough remained, rust-colored sputim and I got another round of antibiotics. No difference. Finally took Levaquin and my lungs are clear. This took about a month and I have just started the recovery process. To complicate things, I have anxiety so anything I encounter as far as symptoms could either be real or anxiety-driven.
I think you and I are making progress. We are doing all the things we have to. Some days I have discovered are real bad and some are pretty good. This is the nature of recoverying, I guess. A series of moving ahead and then taking a step backward.
Please have Hope. Sometimes it is the only thing there is.
