How to use cpap with sinus problems, dry cough even with humidifier

by statuefinder, May 11, 2008 10:28PM
I have had a Cpap machine for 6 or 7 years. I have only been able to successfully use it for about three months straight and saw a great improvement but after a bout of a cold and bronchitis it was impossible to get back on it due to dry throat when the pressure reaches its peak and I continue to cough until I take it off.  I have told the physician over and over and he basically says keep trying.  I have had three sleep studies due to the inability for me to sleep for the correct number of hours. They finally found that I stop breathing about 29 times per hour. I want to use this I need it for health sake, I am 4'11" and have topped out at 183 lbs, I have had half of my thyroid removed (benign tumor), I have neuropathy due to degenerative and arthritis problems.  I know I need to use it but it is so frustrating that if I have it on for one hour before I tear it off from the constant cough. Can you help me find a solution. Thank you in advance.

What are you using for your interface (nasal pillows, mask etc..) I can tell you from experience that the nasal pillows aggravated my sinuses more so than the mask. I was on BiPAP on pretty high pressures and have chronic sinus problems to boot as well so the dripping, drying that you describe sounds all too familiar. Maybe you need to up your humidity as well.
I wish I could be more helpful..Sunny
