seasonal random choking episodes

We have been told this is allergy related but are unsure how to deal with it. Periodically my husband will have choking episodes where he gets what he calls vapor lock. sometimes I have to hit him on the back to help him to start breathing. Usually when he is able to start breathing he has a coughing fit a brings up a lot of mucous. Sometimes he has had episodes of stridor where we take him to the emergency room and they always think it is asthma (but its not) one time they did an Xray and did say he had a swollen epiglotis. They treated him with an epinephrine nebulizer and a benadryl shot. The episodes with stridor seem to happen between November and March. He also has a lot of phlem and mucous at these times. We are just trying to figure out what we can do to keep the choking/stridor episodes from happening.
