smelly ,smelly ,smelly.......what can i do

I have had this problem for 5years now. When I am out in public people look at me funny and hold their noses like something stinks. I thought it might be BV or  a yeast infection at first. Then my sister said something smells like fish. I went to the doctor and got a checkup and they said I was fine. I can't smell anything ,but my neighbors look at me funny when i am outside then they go in the house, my husband coughs constantly and smokes black and milds but the smell from the cigar smells like something rotten to me everytime. I have gone to the dentist and gotten my wisdom teeth pulled because one of them had a hole in it, plus they gave me some antibotics. i thought maybe its my bowels. I take baths three times a day now and brush my teeth twice a day, plus in between meals. I stink up the whole house and my husband doesnt even come in the house when he gets off work anymore he take a bath and then sits outside until he eats and goes to bed. This has ruinied my life i am the talk of the neighborhood, because people even say our house stinks when they pass by. Pray for me please. I dont know what to do . Somedays I feel like comitting suicide. Please help me please. What am I doing wrong.

You seem very well researched and studied on  your issue that seems to plagues tens of thousands of people.  It is an issue!! I'm glad you are doing alot better.  Sometimes you have to make drastic changes in diet and your day to day activities to resolve or reduce medical issues. I too have suffered from bad halitosis or bad breath. Didnt know what the cause it was.... I thought it was a rotten tooth. I had my teeth done.  I also had ENT specialist check.
    >>> It seemed for years I suffered from two conditions at once. One perpetuated the other and made it worse.  I've suffered from chronic Sinusitis for many years and I  different times it got worse from different seasons. I would always get colds and congested for no reason.  The other condition was Tonsillitis (swollen sore tonsils). Mucous seemed to drain all the time abnormally from the back of my nasal passageways and food particles would get caught in tonsils causing stinky white balls of hard mucous.

-- So Yes! I do know what it is like to be the outcast in school or college because of an issue you dont know about yet.  DONT EVER GIVE UP ON LIFE bec of it!!!   I had several friends of mine lie to me that it wasnt a big deal or a problem with them. But I always saw them comment on me behind my back. But at least strangers would be straightforward.  I dont know what I like best ... your friends dishonesty or strangers bluntness.

>> Anyway, I saw an ENT specialist and tonsilectomy scheduled. I took anitbotics before and after surgery. At age 29 I had to have my tonsils removed when most kids have tonsils removed when they are kids. Better late than never i say. It did greatly improve the bad odor but you still have to eat right.

P.S. My suggestion is to see an ENT specialist and ask them about the causes.  Everyone is different and causes can easily be changing diet or taking antibotics without surgery.  GOODLUCK!!

I too suffer from bad breath, and then bad breath and bad smell from nose, and now only bad breath. At one point this problem was so bad in highschool that more than half the students in one of my class dropped out. Maybe it was for other reasons (or other reasons too) that they dropped out, but I know I stank up the room because I can smell the smell coming out of my nose!  I know that it is very painful to go through this problem.  You often feel lonely.  You wish that people could be more sensitive to your bad smell problems.  And more than anything else in the world, you wish that this problem would go away so you could live a normal life interacting with other people.  Pls don't give up on life.  Keep pushing on!  We never know when there is gonna be a cure.  Meanwhile, I suggest we keep on increasing our knowledge on such issues and sharing them with one another.  I find this website to be very helpful to increase my knowledge on bad smells issues from the body:

http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd?GMResultsSummary%26loc=lhc

or

http://rarediseases.info.nih.gov/Resources/Rare_Diseases_Information.aspx

then go to NLM Gateway and type in bad breath or whatever you want to type.

P.S.  Over the past six years I've tried the sinus rinse (NeilMed), got nose surgery from ENT doctor, used mouth washes, even changed my diet, and a load of other stuff but nothing really cured the bad smells, but some does help to control it so that I can live my life.

For mouth washes:
It was observed that the regular ones you get at the drugs store doesn't work and only make it worst for me.  I visisted a Bad Breath Clinic where they did a bunch of tests on my diet and mouth, and they got me on a system where I use Smart Mouth everyday except for Mondays and Thursdays.  On Mondays and Thrusdays I use their specially made mouth wash made with Chlorhexidine ingredient.  There are dentist/etc that also treat bad breath...google them up or check with your local/national government.  The one I went to was called Fresh Breath Clinic.  I payed about $350 Canadian dollars for all the tests and the antibotic rinse, and mouth washes.

For the Sinus rinse I used NeilMed:
At first used I noticed that the smell got even worst!  But the people at the Bad Breath Clinic says to keep using it so I did.  So I keep using it (two times a week only) so not to create new conditions that I'd have to deal with.  Because I desperately want to solve my bad smell problem I also don't want that to create more serious and/or new conditions later on.  After about a year of using the rinse properly, the smell from my nose was gone.  I know a year is a long time, but what choice do I have!  Except to keep pushing on, not with ignorant but carefully with help and support where ever I can get.

For Diet:
I avoid eating any food with garlic, onions, and other type of food that I noticed makes my post-nasal-drip worst and my mouth to smell worst.  The post-nasal-drip creates an increase of mucus that gets stuck at the back of my throat.  The mucus tend to get trapped in the two throat pockets on either sides..where the tonsils are ( http://health.allrefer.com/pictures-images/throat-anatomy.html ).  Sometimes food also get trap in there.  So I make sure when I do my mouth rinses that I rinse really well at the back of my throat and while doing this I turn my head gently left and right so that these spaces also get clean.  During the day at work I just rinse with water.  I also chew gum when I have to talk to people (some gums works better to control the smell so you'd for your particular problem you'd probably have to experiment. But take care of yourself in the progress and also opt for sugar free gums and mints).  Also some food stays in the back of my throat and makes it smell.  Food and drinks like coffee, the really smelly cheese, garlic, onions, etc so I stay away from those. and I do noticed that a week of eating plain food my bad breath smells lighter and my mouth doesn't have a heavy taste to it.  I've also made the switch to being a vegetarian (part do to the fact that meat tend to increase my post-nasal-drip symptom, and part do to my compassion for animals).  But that is personal and you don't have to become a vegetarian.  Just observe how the food you eat affects your body and your breath!  Be proactive.

For Teeth/Tongue/Etc:
I use an electric toothbrush which I find cleans much better than the regular ones.  And overtime, I do find that it helps my mouth feel "lighter."  It is a worthwhile investment...if you can get the money...do think about getting one.  Don't forget to also get and use a tongue cleaner.  Gently clean your tongue. Do reach as far as you can to the back of your throat to clean the back of your tongue...it really does help.  Also floss your teeth and get regular cleaning visits with your dentist (at least 2 times a year).  You might not notice anything different unless you keep doing it day in and day out.  So don't let your laziness and/or frustration stop you.

Okay I have to go somewhere...I am signing off.  If I anything else comes up I will post it.

P.S.  I don't care of this bad smell is a curse.  I refuse to stop searching for solutions.  I'm doing my best for me and for the people around me because I love them and I care.  No matter what, keep your faith with you.  Believe there could be a better tomorrow.
Take care. Oh yah, try manage your stress if you are feeling stressed.

With love. laterz

I HOPE THIS MESSAGE FINDS YOU IN GOOD SPIRITS.

IT It's been awhile since I've written to you but I had to have something positive to report to you from my doctor regarding whether or not I suffer from trimethylaminuria.

I'VE GOT NOTHING!!  I TOOK THE TEST EARLY 10/6 & TO DATE, NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT MY TEST RESULTS; NOT EVEN THE LAB ITSELF.  ALL I'VE HEARD SO FAR IS THAT THE SAMPLE WAS SENT TO A LAB OUT OF STATE!!.

There is a new thing to add:  I had my therapist cut down on the dosage of anitdepressants I have been taking since 2006.  That was when I worked for the "establishment" that liked to say "What's that smell..where is Kim?

I went to the gynecologist 3 times in a 6 month period due to the remarks.  I kept coming back negative, so she thought that I was "off" & recommended I see a therapist.  Anyway, I am almost off the meds & I feel better.  Research shows that the anitdepressants were making the problem worse & not I don't fret what anyone may think.  I recently had a pap smear done within this month & as always, it came back negative.

Actually, I just finished a training program & was greatly appreciated.  Once I figured out that there was a medical term for what I had, it was like I had come to peace with the situation & my mind was at ease.

I am still awaiting the results of the test & I PROMISE I will be in touch with you as soon as I know anything medical that may help you.  Drop a line in athe community so that I know that you are OK & if you may have learned something about our disease that could be of use to me.  I plan to go back to the doctor on Tuesday 10/28 & demand that someone gives me a straight answer to what's wrong with me?

Go to your computer & type in trimethylaminuria.  It gives an explanation of the symtoms classified as Fish Odor Syndome.  This is a genetic disorder of the FM03 gene that causes trimethylamine to build up in the system. The gene has 10 different mutations with smells that range from fish, body parts, garbage etc. & expell gases through the body, breath or other areas.  While I don't have the "fishy odor" I know how you feel.  This condition causes me long term employment opportunities because I was always hearing What's that smel..where is she?  It is something that can be discovered by a urine test.

IMPORTANT:  WHEN YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR; BRING THE PRINTED OUT INFORMATION SO THAT WILL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE TERMINOLOGY OF YOUR DISEASE IS.  ALSO, ASK QUESTIONS & MAKE SURE THEY UNDERSTAND THEY NEED TO HELP YOU & TO HECK WITH BRUISING THEIR PROFESSIONAL EGOS.

Go to the doctor & have a urine test done & it has to be early in the morning because they need to test your 1st urine of the day & takes about 2 weeks to get the results. I was told today by my doctor that this test will cost $238 no insurance & that it costs so much because the only lab that does this type of testing is in Arkansas.  So many advances in medicine & HEALTH PROFESSIONALS HAVE NO IDEA TO CHECK FOR THIS DISEASE & LABS ARENT EQUIPPED TO TEST FOR THIS AS NORMAL PROCEDURE.

I don't understand your husband's reaction to the scent but please don't do something stupid; GET EDUCATED; NOT FRUSTRATED!!

Hi,

I came accross your forum and some information when searching for some unrelated information on how people smell.  After reading your cry for help, I came accross some information about Trimethylaminuria on an on-line encyclopedia.  The link is as follows:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimethylaminuria

I am not a doctor, but you could read the info to see if the symptoms are what you experience and ask your doctor about it.  What I read said Trimethylaminuria can be diagnosed with a simple blood test.

I hope this helps.

Please dont do anything drastic. I also have the condition as well. It will come and go. I heard that there are some mushroom supplements called Champex that may help with the condition. I have not tried it yet. My symptoms come and go but if i dont do the sinus rinse kit it is worse. If you have any luck with a cure let us know.
