Well I am reasonably sure I have HSV-1, although I suppose it could be something different because I never had a blood test done...my sores have always responded well to Zovirax so I just assumed the doctor's initial diagnosis was correct.
If you have hsv1, you won't be reinfected with a different strain.
I wonder though if you do have that. Not everything that happens on the mouth is a cold sore, so ask your doc for a type specific IgG blood test.
Your friend might have had a cold sore, and not all cold sores will look the same, or she could have had something else going on, too.
