Herpes Test Results

I got my test results back from the lab but my doctor is out of town and cannot read them. I will write them exactly as they look on my test results page:

HSV 1/2 IGG, Herpeselect
  Type Specific AB
  HSV 1 IGG Type Specific
      AB                                                       >5.00 H                         index

HSV 2 IGG Type Specific
      AB                                                         0.09                             index
          Index                                  Interpretation
          1.10                                 Positive

This assay is type specific and will differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections. a single positive result   only indicates previous immunologic exposure and the level of the antibody response may not be used to determine active infection or disease stage. The test should be repeated in 4-6 weeks when negative or equivocal results are obtained in suspected early herpes simplex disease.

Do I have herpes?

Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum.

Straight to your question.  your results show that you have HSV-1, the virus that causes most cold sores and a minority of cases of genital herpes and that you do not have HSV-2.  HSV-1 infections are very common with over 60% of adult Americans having the infection.  Of these only about 1 out of 10 infected persons know it.

These tests are not useful for definitively diagnosing recently acquired HSV infections so, depending on your situation/exposure history and circumstance, repeat testing may be useful. You should discuss this with your doctor when he/she returns.

For additional information on HSV infections, I would suggest seeking addition information on sites such as the American Social health Association web-site (disclosure, Dr. Handsfield and I are both on the Board of ASHA)  EWH

It is still most likely that your HSV-1 infection represents oral infection.  It could be spread to others by oral contact although the risk is low.  EWH

Thank you for your response! It helps a lot.

I have never had a cold sore though or have I had an outbreak of any kind. Is it possible to have HSV-1 without ever having a cold sore or showing any signs? Also, is it possible to spread since I do not have cold sores?
