Any connection between male genital warts and having HIV?

Doctor HHH...
43 gay male here.. Sick and depressed over my genital wart and what my dermatologist has said.. Here's my story.. In Oct 2012 I noticed a small fleshy bump in my shaved pubic area.. I went to the dermatologist and he immediately said it was a wart and removed it in the office.. He then proceeded to say that its a sign of HIV... I flipped out! He said that males do not usually develop genital warts.....  Back in July or August of 2012 I received a hand job, oral sex and I rubbed my penis against his ***... Afterwards I noticed he had large legions on his testicles and he said they were cysts....  3 months later I noticed my wart...
Anyway I also showed the dermatologist some small white-looking pimples on the underside of my penis.. He said they were nothing to worry about...
I returned to him a month later because I noticed I had a fleshy looking thing on my thigh... He looked at it and said it was not a wart but probably a skin tag.. He then saw my underside of my penis and said I had a small group of warts there... I told him I showed him last time and he said they were nothing,,, he then prescribed Condolyx and said to use it also on my skin tag... The tag fell off in a day and the warts cleared up in three days.. I have been wart free since....
He has me crazy thinking I have HIV.... He also said HPV attacks the immune system and I must have HIV if I have warts.... I cant eat or sleep over this..
I have had my occasional blow jobs and hand jobs here and there and I have had PROTECTED sex with a positive bottom over 2 years ago.. I didnt know he was HIV positive until it was over... He did give me oral sex without a condom and we kissed too... He was on HIV meds and has been positive for over 30 years... Other than that.. I only top with condoms and I haven't topped that many guys... I hardly give oral sex too... I also belong to a sauna which I go to relax... Is it possible to have picked up warts in such a damp climate like sauna?

I think this is pretty clear from my replies above. There is no need for HIV testing on account of the wart.  However, all men who have non-monogamous sex with other men (and many monogamous ones, if their partners' may have others) should have routine HIV testing from time to time, like once a year.  On that basis, perhaps you should be tested if it hasn't been done recently.  Your call.

That ends this thread.  Take care.

Hmmm...  let me understand....   You're a gay man who participates in anal sex with other men (even with condoms), the highest single risk factor that exists (in the United States) for HIV....  and you're worried about the effect of HPV on your risk for HIV or other health effects????  This is sort of like a combat soldier worried about his cholesterol intake.

THANK YOU...

Ps... I also just quit smoking....

I heard that smoking and binge drinking could also cause an outbreak of warts... Is this true?
Sorry just reading all the crap online from different websites can make a person go crazy..... Especially sites that question HIV and HPV!
UGH!

Garden variety, non-recurrent genital warts carry absolutely no implications for the quality of one's immune system.

I'm not a mind reader and haven't a clue what your dermatologist believes about HPV and HIV.  My best guess is that you misunderstood him.  You could ask him for clarification.

You're certainly not "too old" to have HPV or genital warts.  At least 80-90% of all sexually active people acquire genital HPV at one time or another, often several times, you probably have had a number of HPV infections over the years.  Most infections never cause symptoms and clear up on their own.

Simple genital rubbing is not likely to transmit HPV.  You could have caught the HPV infection causing your warts any time in the past several months or even a few years.  For most HPV infections, it is impossible to poinpoint the source and I suggest you not waste any mental energy on it.

Really, mellow out. As I said, almost all people get HPV from time to time, and at least 20% of all humans are diagnosed with genital warts sometime in their lives.  This is a trivial clinical problem that should be viewed as an inconvenience, not a serious health threat.

Thank you but still sick over this....  Do you think my immune system is compromised since I now have visible warts? IS this why my dermatologist is suggesting I have HIV? Am I too old to have HVP?
I am so confused and distraught!

Welcome to the forum.

Sometimes there is enough information in the title of a question to answer accurately. In this case, the answer is no:  there isn't "Any connection between male genital warts and having HIV.

Now having read the questions themselves:  Your dermatologist is wrong, or you misunderstood him.  The frequency of genital warts in no higher or lower in people with or without HIV.

Since you are a man who has anal sex with other men, you are at some risk of HIV.  It will remain very low if you consistently use condoms for anal sex, and I would advise you to always ask about HIV status before having sex, even safe practices like oral sex or anal sex with condoms.  (Many HIV infections have occurred when intentions for safe sex were not followed in the heat of the moment.)  Kissing and mutual masturbation are risk free with respect to HIV, and oral sex is either no risk at all or very low risk.

Genital warts are only acquired by sex.  Without sex, you can't get them in a sauna or other damp environment.  But as discussed above, they don't signal a higher risk of HIV.

I hope this has helped.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
