Cannot Believe My Situation !!!

I recently developed a slightly clear discharge and a mild burning sensation at the tip of my penis. There is a small amount of swelling of my testicles. It doesn’t burn when I urinate, ubt after I’m finished passing urine it begins and again, is only really mild in nature. I saw a doctor today and he said that I may have contracted “chlamydia” or what is called “Non Specific Urethitis”. Also, I’m trying to figure out at what point I caught this, if it is either of the two. The last time I had unprotected sex was September 5th and symptoms first showed October 10th - 5 weeks ago!!! I have only had sex these two times in the last 18months.

I have several questions :

1) Do you believe this diagnosis is correct? Chlamydia or NSU … he ruled out Gonorrhea and said a swab test was not necessary since the symptoms and appearance of my penis did not show typical signs of this disease; he seemed adamant that it was not, should he have considered it?
2) If I had unprotected sex with whom I thought was a monogamous partner last on September 5th, 2011 is it likely I caught whatever this is from her? We had sex a total of six times over the course of a week, again with the last time being September 5th, 2011.
3) Before this, the last time I had unprotected sex was with a girl one night on June 27th, 2011 and then not again with this partner (almost 4months to when I began showing symptoms this week – Oct 10th); is it possible Chlamydia or NSU laid dormant for 4months and then struck me this week? Have you ever heard this happening?

I really didn’t want it to be the girl I slept with September 5th and am still surprised(if it was her I contracted this from), but c’mon … 4months vs 5weeks ago? Thank you so much for any feedback … I’d really like to know at what point I could have contracted this, it’s bothering me quite a bit!!!

Lastly, I just want to reiterate that I have only had unprotected sex twice in my life … is it really getting that bad out there people??

Thank you so much for the quick response doctor! So you believe it to be possible I could have caught this NGU (yes, live in Canada where we refer as NSU) as long as 4months ago??? I was given a urine test for both chlamydia and gonorrhea, will know results in 7 days. I was prescribed a 7 day, 2 tablets a day of doxycycline (I am allergic to Penicillin). Does this sound like it will work in your professional opinion? Also, I am heterosexual … still can’t believe it possible for me to have been healthy for four months and then all of a sudden this affliction show itself out of the blue – in your opinion, what is the probability it was from the girl on Sept. 5th as opposed to the girl on June 27th? Sorry for all these questions … and again, thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly doctor!

Welcome to the forum.

Your symptoms are typical for nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), except for the late onset; 1-2 weeks is most common, but 4-6 weeks is possible.  NGU is the same thing as NSU.   (Are you by chance in the UK or a commonwealth country?  NSU is the usual term there, versus usual use of NGU in North America.)  ABout one third of NGU cases are caused by chlamydia; a number of other bacteria are responsible for most.  Except for chlamydia, testing for the exact cause usually is not done.  I hope you were tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea.  To your specific questions:

1) This indeed sounds like NGU.  I agree gonorrhea is unlikely based on your symptoms; and gonorrhea symptoms almost always start within 5 days.  Still, I disagree with yoru doctor's apparent decision not to test you for gonorrhea.  Was a chlamydia test done?

2) You probably caught it from your partner.  She (or he) needs to be treated; and should be tested first for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

3) It is possible you acquired your infection in June, but most likely it was from the more recent partner.  However, the June partner also should be tested.

As for your final question, you have just been a bit more unlucky that most.  The large majority of sexually active persons don't acquire NGU, chlamydia, or any other STD after having only two partners.  But as you have learned, it certainly is possible.

So the most important things are for you to take the treatment that was prescribed (let me know what medication you were given); assure that both your partners get examined and tested for both gonorrhea and chlamydia; and that the more recent partner is treated.
