Sure, feel free to post the results. I expect them to be negative.
Hi dr, Thank you for your quick reply.
I used Roche Combur urine sticks that are used by health professionals.
Used it one urine, the discharge is too little to even test.
The bit of clear discharge isn't prominent. My penis isn't leaking and I only notice it from time to time by squeezing/milking my penis and looking very well. Most days I notice nothing in the morning.
I will go for a test. If ok I keep you posted about the result.
Welcome to the forum and thanks for your question, which came in just as I was logging on. (Most users shouldn't expect immediate replies!)
A certain amount of clear fluid in the urethra is normal, especially early in the morning. It's typically just a little normal mucus, or pre-ejaculate fluid which accompanies all sexual arousal and erection, including the normal erections that occur a few times every night while sleeping (typically during REM stage sleep and dreaming).
The home tests for urinary tract infections really should not be used on fluid from the urethra. They are designed strictly for use on urine, which naturally dilutes any secretions that might be present in the urethra -- resulting in false positive results. Your weakly positive leukocyte test can safely be ignored. (I also agree these tests can give subtle results. But most true infection give strong results that are easy to interpret; the borderlines generally can be ignored.) To your specific questions:
1) Discharge due to urethritis (whether chlamydia, gonorrhea, or NGU) can be most prominent in the morning, but usually also continues during the day. Abnormal discharge also stains underwear; physiciologic mucus does not.)
2) Yes, the consistency of urethral mucus or pre-ejaculate fluid can vary from time to time.
3) Discussed above: ignore the weak LE test (and stop doing it!)
4) All people who are sexually active outside mutually monogamous relationships should be tested for common STDs from time to time. With "multiple sex partners the last year, including CSW", I would recommend annual testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV. So if you haven't been tested recently, this would be a good time, while it's on your mind. But not because of the symptoms you describe.
I would encourage you to stop the apparently vigorous self examination. If you don't see obvious discharge or underwear stains without squeezing the penis, you needn't worry. Repeated "milking" the penis can itself cause irritation and perhaps discharge. And for sure stop the routine UTI test strips. As I said, they are not designed or calibrated to be used in this way.
I hope this has helped. Best wishes-- HHH, MD
