See paragraph 2 of my reply above.
Thank you for your reply. My menses has been late for a week, but it wasn't a concern because my husband and I had been sexually inactive the past year. So it is possible that I may have contracted another type of STD other than herpes?
Sex during menstruation or exposure of men to their partner's vaginal blood is not harmful if no STD is present. Many couples continue sex during women's periods. Whether or not to do so is a matter of taste, not health. If you have active herpes and he doesn't already have it, of course he can catch it from you, but that has nothing to do with whether or not you are menstruating.
Of course it is not normal to have abdominal pain after sex, or at all. There are too many causes of abdominal pain for me to say anything reliable the cause, but it isn't herpes, which doesn't cause abdominal pain. If you or your husband has had other partners in recent weeks or months, it could be pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), usually caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea. You also don't say whether your current period is normal, i.e. on time or early, heavier than normal, etc. Abnormal periods can be a sign of STD.
You need to see a health care provider right away. If the pain is severe, if the bleeding is heavy, or if you think you might have a fever, get examined today, even if you have to go to an emergency room to do it. For sure see someone within a couple of days, even if the symptoms clear up over the weekend. If you or your husband has had sex with anybody else in the past few months, he also needs to be examined. (And of course he needs to be examined if he has any STD symptoms, like abnormal discharge from the penis.)
Don't mess around with abdominal pain. Many possibilities are quite serious. Good luck-- HHH, MD
