Please Help!! Extremely Worried.

Dear Doctor(s):

Ok... this is going to sound crazy... but here goes (Please Read The Entire Message to understand my concern and realize that this is Not a typical toilet bowl scenario where people are unecessarily worried):

I stay at a dormitory and my dorm-mate is gay and VERY Promiscuous.  As paranoid as i am about catching something, i always lay toilet paper down on the toilet seat before i sit down (even though I understand that it is virtually impossible to catch an std from a toilet seat).

This is rather embarassing, but i sometimes have anal bleeding from hemorroids.  In this particular instance, I ran out of toilet tissue (first using the last piece that I had, and the remainder on the seat).  Not even realizing that i had used the last clean tissue, I was talking on the phone and didn't even realize that i had picked up the toilet tissue off of the seat and used the dirty tissue to continue wiping my anus.  To make matters Even Worse, I looked at the tissue and saw that i was bleeding.  So, to clarify, I wiped (deep, too, to ensure that i cleaned all the blood) my bleeding anus with tissue that i had used to sit on the toilet seat.  AM I IN DANGER?  I'm losing sleep from fear that I will test positive for something in the coming weeks.  PLEASE HELP and advise.

Thank you in advance for answering such a crazy question... I do know that under NORMAL circumstances (no broken skin, etc.), there is no reason to fear public toilets.....

**But under THESE circumstances (with me using a dirty piece of tissue [that was used on the toilet seat] deep within my bleeding anus, and sharing a bathroom with an extremely promiscuous homosexual dorm-mate), i am making myself sick worrying about it.

Your Prompt and Thorough advice is greatly appreciated.

No risk.  Here are the facts:

1.  You did not say your dorm mate has HIV.  Odds are he does not.  Dorms being what they are, you would likely know if he was.

2.  STDs including HIV are not transmitted by inanimate objects.  If you picked up the TP, my guess is that it was dry, thus no secretions to worry about.

3.  IF he is infected, and if there were secretions on the site, for you to have transmitted infection to yourself is still virtually unheard of.

Bottom line (pun intended) - no risk.  Put these concerns behind you (intended that pun too).   EWH

I'm not the doctor, but I bet he will say- you are not at risk.  Zero Zip zilch- Sexually transmitted means you need sex not a wipe.

You need to have sufficient virus or contagina to have infection work.  It is highly unlikely that the tissue did that.  Also before that your roommate needs to be infected.  While he may get around, he may use safe sex practices which reduce the chances.

Look, I have had people sneeze in my face and not caught a cold.  Why is it so hard to think that wiping will not infect you?
