HIV from receiving oral sex (M to F).

Hi there,

I am female, and I have had unprotected oral sex with a fairly good male friend whose sexual life, however, is unknown to me. He assured me that he did not have any STD's however I am not entirely sure if he knows what the risk factors are.

He performed oral sex on me for a short period of time and I didn't think anything of it until I fell sick 2 months later. I had a sore throat, a very mild fever, and a runny nose and general aches and pains. Now, 7 months later, I am suffering from a prolonged bacterial vaginosis that has not responded to metrogel (approx. 1.5 month in duration), and recently I've acquired a slightly sore throat. Tongue and mouth look fine and my doctor ruled out any form of yeast infection.

My question is: should I get tested? Would a runny nose be part of ARS? What are the statistics on HIV infection of the receptive partner in cunnilingus?

Any information would be much appreciated. B.

Don't worry, you're OK.  The only STD ever clearly documented to be transmitted to a woman by oral sex, to my knowledge, is herpes due to HSV-1.  There is no documented case of HIV transmission.  That doesn't prove it can't occur, but it means the risk is extremely low.  The symptoms you describe do not sound like HIV infection (because of the runny nose, which--as you ask--is not part of the HIV symptom complex); and anyway it sounds like a common cold, which of course is infinitely more common than primary HIV infection.  On top of that, 2 months is too long a delay for onset of symptoms.  Finally, BV is an extremely common problem in women with or without HIV; it does not signify HIV.

You really needn't worry and do not need HIV testing, assuming you have no other risks. Even if the result were positive, it would be because you caught it somewhere else, not from the oral sex exposure you describe.

Good luck--- HHH, MD
