srd? prostatitis?

hi doc, great service you got here.
i'm a 20 year old straight male. college student.
here's my deal:
-beginning of february 2006 i began to feel a sort of tight sensation in my penis AFTER i went to the bathroom. it started right after i got over a cold that wouldnt go away. still have it now. i wouldn't call it a burning sensation. it's sort of a numb, tightness about 2 inches down my urethra. bothers me ONLY AFTER i've gone to the bathroom (not during) and continues to bother me for about 30 minutes. usually worse in the morning.
-ive seen the campus clinic, my two family doctors, and a urologist, none of which seemed that std should be considered. although they all asked about discharges, etc. i have not been tested. most said to stay off acids, caffeine and drink a ton of water.
-i've been given a variety of antibiotics. i was on doxycycline twice. 100 mg i believe. and my family doctor who thought it was prostatisis gave me levaquin (500 mg) for two weeks, which seemed to help (he did a prostate exam, said no swelling). but its definitely still bothering me some. on a scale from 1 to 10 it was about a 6 and now its about a 2. but i consistant 2.
-i have had trouble sleeping (from anxiety, im sure)
and i have noticed a totally clear discharge about 5 to 10 mins after ejaculation. which the urologist told me was probably nothing. i masturbate probably like 2 times a week. if that.
-my last sexual encounter(s) were in the autumn of last year. the last one was october i believe. and i used condoms. the only other thing would be one encounter of mutual masturbation at the end of december. but ive read numerous times off your site that stds are hardly ever contracted from mutual masturbation.
i'm supposed to go in to the urologist for a follow up at the beginning of may and he said he may have do a scope.

my questions are:
1. are there any std's that can cause this sort of symptom??
2. after the treatment(s) ive had, std's that cause these symptoms usually are gone anyways, right?
3. should testing be considered? i'm a bit timid.
4. if the urologist decides to do a urethral scope, how bad is it? he said hed put me to sleep for it, but its still a little frightening.

-any information you can provide is greatly appreciated, thanks so much.

True prostatitis is uncommon at your age, and it is unlikely it explains your symptoms, but you should ask your urologist.  But my main advice is to disregard your symptoms and just live with them.  They probably will fade with time.  You can be 100% certain they do not reflect a serious health problem that will ever harm you or any future sex partner.

Sorry, I really can't help.  Neither I nor any online source can solve a problem like yours, after evaluation by a "campus clinic, my two family doctors, and a urologist, none of which seemed that std should be considered", and especially after the treatments you have received.

1) There is no possibility than an STD is responsible for your symptoms, and in any case you could not have acquired an STD from the exposures you describe.  Your symptoms are typical for anxiety, either as a direct cause or as a magnifier of meaninglesss body sensations.

2) Right.  3) No further STD testing is indicated.  4) That's a question for the urologist, but I don't think it's any big deal.  However, I very much doubt it's going to show anything that explains your symptoms.  Before you have the procedure, you should ask the urologist for his frank opinion about what he expects to find and his opinion about a possible emotional/anxiety explanation.

Good luck-- HHH, MD
