Herpes? Folliculitis?? Fungus?????

I recently had unprotected sex with a female who shaved her pubic hair with a razor. She did not appear to be symptomatic of any STD's. Six weeks later (8/15) I woke up with 4 small red lesions on the shaft of my penis and remaining foreskin from an incomplete circumcision. The non-clustered bumps were not painful, nor did I have any "pre breakout" symptoms of herpes. The following morning there were 3 more red bumps looking like small pimples (only one really having a tiny white head on it). I made it to see a doctor (not a dermatologist) that day (8/16) and he did not think it was herpes. He was fairly confident of a folliculitis diagnoses and didn't even feel it necessary to test me (despite my very obvious worry). He gave me an antibiotic potion (I think a "Zpack") and bactroban ointment. I felt better but woke up on 8/18 with 4 more of the same thing at the base of my penis but on the scrotum. I now have a total of 11 non clustered sores and am worrying myself to death. It has only been 4 days since they arrived and I keep thinking about the doc saying "it will probably clear up as fast as it showed up. I am almost %100,...as sure as I could be in this lifetime". Thats sounds a bit cocky after reading every med report online in the past 72 hours. Many mention a difficult diagnoses on herpes. Just lookin for another opinion as I did not have any tests done. Whats your take on contagious folliculitis and could  it be on the shaft (not tip) where there are so few fair follices. 11 seems uncommon. None of the sores have a hair coming out of it. I have no other symptoms of herpes but I realize that means very little. Much obliged for your help and advice.

Could a slightly swollen and sore lymph node on my right pubic region be caused by  something other than herpes? I am assumming that the swelling and tenderness could be from any bacterial or fungal infection. Is that correct to think or should I heighten my fears of an STD?

As I have said many times, whenever a person suspects his or her own symptoms likely have a psychological or emotional origin, probably they are almost always right.  But in your case, you also have overt, visible symptoms.  If the penile lesions persist another 1-2 weeks, or if they go away and return, it would make sense to see a provider.

Thanks doc I greatly appreciate your time, this site has helped me relax in the past days as I have read every single account of herpes. I wish everyone posting questions the best of luck with their inquiries.

Like many others, I can think of nothing else and am obsessing over this whole thing. My sensations seem hightened as I am constantly checking for discharge or anythign else. A couple of the bumps are a bit sore but look the same as they did from the very first day. I am on day 5 since they first appeared. Could my brain be taking over and causing things to seem more pronounced, as I am in constant "awareness" of my genital region. Any thoughts on when I should see a doc if the symptoms persist?

Any inflammatory condition of the genital area, legs or feet, no matter what the cause, can cause lymphadenopathy (lymph node inflammation) in the groin.  If you have lymphadenopathy, it's undoubtedly due to the same non-STD problem.  That symptom doesn't alter my opinion or advice.

Your description doesn't sound much like herpes, either the time course of your symptoms or the location of the lesions,  And the onset is too late to be suspicious of catching during the exposure 6 weeks previously.  Most important, you have seen a provider--a dermatologist, no less--who said it isn't herpes.  You should take his opinion at face value; don't try to spin it based on your reading of his attitude.  But of course return to him (or get another opinion) if the symptoms persist or recur.  But don't worry about herpes.

Good luck-- HHH, MD
