Today i got more blood work done and sent it to lab corp, I also went to another infection and disease doctor, and be basically laughed in my face and told me there was no way possible my number would come out so high if i was positive. He told me based on my test results i showed him that there was no way i had it made me go to a ob as well and get another pap smear done to be double sure that i dont.
i should have to results back from lab corp either today or tomorrow.
To explain my reasoning a bit more: Neither I nor Terri Warren (herpes professional forum) are knowledgeable about an HSV IgG test that gives such high numbers. With HerpeSelect, typical high level results are 3-6, certainly not 20+ And with HerpeSelect, the frequency of low-positive HSV-2 results is higher in those who are positive for HSV-1. Therefore, the very large difference between your HSV-1 and HSV-2 results conceivably might mean the HSV-2 result is false. This possibility fits best with the rest of your story: little reason to suspect you have HSV-2, atypical symptoms, and your previous blood test result with HerpeSelect.
I will be very interested to learn the outcome of your additional testing.
We will surely do that as soon as possible. At the quest lab.
I still don't know how to interpret the test with the 28.5 and 6.0 results. My guess is you do not have HSV-2. I recommend another HerpeSelect test (e.g. at Quest labs) and a Western blot. Let me know the results and we'll try to settle this once an for all.
My test say
Herpes Simplex Virus(HSV) I and II (In roman Numbers) IGG Abs
Herpes Simplex Virus II (In Roman Numbers 6.00 Index 0.00-0.90
IgG
0.9 or =1.10 Positive
My husband got a test done by Labcorp in May and it says
HSV1 and 2-Specific Ab,IgG
Hsv2 IgG Type Spec <0.91 0.00-0.90 index
Negative 1.09
I wish there was a way i could show you or even send you a picture of my results. this is all it says is
-Herpes Simplex Virus Type I IgG (with the roman numbers) 28.50 Index 0.00-0.90
-Herpes Simplex Virus Type II IgG (with the roman numbers) 6.00 (in bold) index 0.00-0.90
0.9 or 1.10 Equivocal
>=1.10 Positive
Then is says,
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Types 1 & 2 IGM
HSV 1 IgM Antibodies <1:10
HSV 2 IgM Antibodies <1:10
which was done at lab corp..
Would you medical advice be to just get tested one more time with a different lab after monday when my husband's test come back if so negative. I know if his is negative so will mine be, i have never been with anyone else. As far as more information thats all it says on the paper when i try and which accurate lab they have no idea what im talking about when it comes to testing for herpes.
I just want to know my best option, please help!
Thank you
These results are negative and do not change my opinions or advice above. Please re-read the first paragraph of my last reply. Most likely you do not have HSV-2, but there is nothing more I can say unless and until you provide more information about the test that gave the value of 6.0 for HSV-2.
Hello doctor. Got my igm results from LabCorp
HSV1 Igm <1:10 titer <1:10
Hsv2 Igm <1:10 titer <1:10
August 14, 2013
GenPath Labs
Test Ordered- Pap, Liquid-Based
Hsv1 1.0 Not detected
Hsv2 1.0 Not detected
My husband is still waiting for his results which should be in on Monday.
So whats your thoughts from all this about testing positive to hsv2?
Where should we take it from here?
Should we get retested?
Thanks again.
It might be you have had a test with much higher posiitve/negative cut-off values than HerpeSelect, and that your HSV-2 result of 6.0 is negative. That's why I need to know the exact test, or that you might consider another test at Quest Laboratories.
There are no medical conditions that have any effect on the HSV test results. Ths incluces ovulation, active cold sores, abortions, or any other illness.
Finally, it sounds like your husband was not at risk for HSV-2.
Thank you for taking the time out to answer my questions,
I dont know the results right off the top of my head nor do i have the paper work but i will surely retrieve them. When i first seen the results with such high number i could not believe it, could you please tell me whats the most accurate test i should get done to make sure that i do or dont have herpes type 2. Another question whats the most accurate type of test to see if im ovulating. i know its off of what were talking about but ive had 4 abortions and i feel like it will effect me from getting pregnant. Forgot to mention that I have oral hsv1 and had a cold sore 2 weeks ago. Can that have any affect with my test results? Can the hsv2 result be a false positive? Last thing my husband had protected sex with her but unprotected oral sex three times but one time every other day and he got tested today for stds and should get his results by monday. Thanks again and ill post my test results when i get them. Thanks again for your generous time Dr.
Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question. There are lots of issues; I'll try to tease them out, but I may need more information. (Minor point, but FYI: the proper terminology uses Arabic numerals, not Roman -- HSV-1 and 2, not I and II.)
Your closing lines suggest that your previous tests for "all STDs" included HSV testing, with negative results. Are you sure HSV testing was done? For both HSV-1 and HSV-2? Can you find the numerical results? Also, call the lab and try to learn the exact HSV blood test done last Monday. I am unfamiliar with tests that give numbers as high as your 28.5 for HSV-1; this probably wasn't HerpeSelect.
Leaving those uncertainties aside, from the information currently available I doubt you have any STD. Of course an extramarital exposure by a partner doesn't can result in STD, usually it does not. Second, your symptoms aren't typical for STDs, and alternate explanations became apparent (UTI, yeast). Third, the azithromycin (Z-pak) would have resolved almost all bacterial STDs that could have explained some of your symptoms.
Which leaves herpes -- but your symptoms aren't even close to what is expected for herpes. But then we have to deal with the blood test. We'll have to leave that until you fill in the information noted above, as best you can. In the meantime, my tentative responses to your specific questions:
1) It is hard to say whether either your HSV-1 or HSV-2 test result is wrong or right. But even if you have either of these viruses, it does not explain your symptoms. As your next question suggest, you seem to already know that herpes doesn't cause the sorts of symptoms you have had.
2) Most likely you haven' shows such signs because you don't have genital infection with either HSV-1 or 2.
3) If you acquired HSV from your husband, of course it is necessary that he is infected -- and his blood test would be positive. One way to resolve the current uncertainty is for him to be tested. If he has negative results, it will prove he didn't infect you.
4) Have children if you have herpes? Of course. Why not? In some parts of the world, 90% of pregnant women have both HSV-1 and HSV-2, and they continue to (over)populate the world with healthy babies.
5) If we can't sort out your current blood test results, perhaps the easiest approach would be for you to be retested with one of the standard tests, such as HerpeSelect at Quest Labs.
6) Couples are resistant (usually immune) to new infections with the HSV strain they already ahve. Therefore, couples do not "ping pong" their mutual HSV infections back and forth.
7) How to have a child? The normal way -- nothing special. The risk of newborn herpes is low, even when mom is infected, and preventing it is easy.
I hope this has started to help ease your concerns--
