Herpes and HIV possible exposure

January 1, had oral sex with my gf. We broke up. Feb 11th,very brief sexual interaction with a guy. fingered me for less then 30 secs, some fluid present(mine). penis touched vagina lips and immediately after i felt contact I turned away and he stopped. I don't believe he had a condom on. March 12th,30 days later I had an outbreak. Had full STD screening,DR cultured area. All blood tests negative. Culture positive for HSV 1. Since March no new outbreak. Will i get alot more outbreaks? Am i shedding all the time? My ex-gf said she has had a cold sore before. 1)More likely i got HSV1 from my gf's mouth or from that brief contact with that male? If it was from her my body would have had 2 months to make antibodies and might have shown up on a blood test? 2)What are the chances that I have oral HSV1 /ocular HSV. I have not had an outbreak of the mouth but i did kiss my gf frequently. deathly scared i spread it from my genital area to my mouth or eye(i wear contacts)when i didn't know i had it. Is there a certain window of time where if i self infected myself i would have an oral or ocular outbreak. Scared I am going to go blind. 3)Scared that the brief penis vagina interaction could have spread HIV to me.It was been over 3 months, should I get another HIV test at this point to make sure? he did not pentrate fully. Is this type of interaction common for aquiring HIV. don't know if he had an fluids or was just aroused. 3 months enough time for antibodies to show up for HSV1/HIV?

Sorry for the confusion earlier.  The last time I was with my ex-gf  was the beginning of January.

Should i just assume that I have oral HSV 1 also, b/c obviously i did kiss her at the time of our sexual contact??? I have not had any oral outbreaks up to this point.  Could I have only got HSV1 in the genital area?  Would i have already had an oral outbreak by now?

If I have another antibody test will it show up now (almost 4 months later since any sexual contact)?  What are the odds of contracting HIV from that brief contact with that male i described earlier?

thanks so much for your time and expertise

The contact with the male was not oral sex.  His penis did touch my vagina briefly.

Also,  I had a blood test for HSV 1 one and i did not show any antibodies so doesn't that mean it is a recent infection?  The genital culture showed HSV-1.

No wonder I was confused.  This is the first I realized you're a woman.  Your question first referred to contact with your girlfriend.  I shouldn't make assumptions, but few lesbians have posted questions on the forum.

A positive genital culture for HSV-1 and negative antibody test for the same virus shows you were experiencing your first infection with HSV-1 (at any body site).  Genital-to-genital HSV-1 transmission is uncommon, and the brief penile contact you describe doesn't sound likely.  Your genital HSV-1 infection almost certainly came from someone's mouth--presumably your girlfriend in February, if that's the last time you received cunnilingus.

There have been many questions and discussions on this forum about genital herpes due to HSV-1.  Use the search link to look for 'genital herpes' and 'genital HSV-1'.  You can also look at some excellent online sites, such as www.ashastd.org, www.metrokc.gov/health/APU/std, www.cdc.gov, and www.westoverheights.com.

1) The timing doesn't fit with either event; 30 days is too long.  However, you might have been infected earlier then had a recurrent oubreak--in other words, it is possible you have been infected for months or even years.  I don't understand what contact you had with your male partner - you mention 'vagina lips' (??).  If he performed oral sex on you, then you could have been infected either that way or by oral sex from your gf.

2) If your genital infection truly is HSV-1, and if you have no oral symptoms, then it is very unlikely you also have oral HSV-1 infection.  Don't worry about auto-inoculation to your eyes. That occurs mostly with the initial infection, not recurrent ones.  In other words, if it hasn't happened yet, probably it never will.  Anyway, if you get a sore eye due to herpes, you will know it very early, and prompt treatment is very effective.  In 30 years in the STD business, I have never seen (or even heard of) a single case of someone going blind due to herpes.

3) HIV transmission from your gf is extremely unlikey, and it also is unlikely from such brief contact with your male partner.  But it's fine with me if you have an HIV test to be sure.  Three months is plenty of time for reliable testing.

If you still have questions, please search the forum and the suggested websites before coming back to this thread with a follow-up question.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
