Herpes?

Dear med,

I am 21 years old, and didnt begin to be sexually active until i was 19.  Ive always used protection while having sex.  I was curious of a few things.  I have like hair folicle like small bumps on my penis, they look exactly as if you would get goose bumps when it's cold or stretch out your skin, this looks quite normal and ive even had this since when i was younger.  Ive looked at pictures of the bumps cause by herpes and they dont match really but im still paranoid enough to ask.  Ive also had irratation on my penis sometimes masterbating without lubrication and giving myself friction burn, i know this isnt a good idea, but i was wondering if that is common normal to get friction burn, same as if you were to rub some part of your body like an arm very hard, and ive gotten redness and irratation from this friction burn, but never if i were to use lubricant, even getting what you may call "a belt" just from friction burn which is quite common, is it possible to get a scab like any other scab from simply friction burn, as i have before, i never ever have any irratation unless i go to far without lubricant the same result from rubbing my arm vigously or something. Im going to go in and get tested tommorow but could you please let me know if any of this can possible be normal and what would be the BEST test for herpes, so i can get a quick result.  In the past i have had friction burn at a young age without being sexually active, and a period where i stop MB for nearly a year, it never occured just when i over did it..so just curious about these things.  Thank you

Your symptoms don't sound at all like herpes.  The "bumps" you describe sound like normal penile skin.  Hair follicles (yes, there is rudimentary hair on the penile shaft) and sebaceous glands tend to become more prominently visible as men age.  The irritation you describe indeed sounds physical, not infectious.

Ask for either the HerpeSelect HSV-2 test or the Biokit HSV-2 test; no other blood tests for genital herpes are useful.  See numerous other threads on this forum for more detail.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
