Irritation/Redness Opening of Penis

Hello. I am a 29 year old male.  2 days ago, on Dec. 1, 2007 I noticed some irritation at the opening of my penis.
The irritation would happen when the tip would rub up againt my boxers.
Upon further inspection, I opened the opening of my penis and notice it was red/irritated on the one side of the opening of my penis.
I did touch the red area and it did trigger the same irritation sensation i got when rubbing against my boxers.
It really didnt hurt, its more or less irritation.  On a scale of 1-10, I would rate the irritation at like a 2 or 3.  But on a few occasions, it felt like a 5 or 6 - when boxers rub on it just right.

I have no pain while urinating or ejactulating.  No itchyness or burning at all.

3 weeks ago on November 16th, 2007...I did recieve unprotected oral sex from a female stripper for less than 30 seconds.
I made her stop.  I did not ejactulate in her mouth, but she did finish me maually, using her spit as lubrication.
I cleaned up using a papertowel from the restroom.
When I returned home, I did wash my penis with soap.

I have had no sexual contact with anyone other than daily masturbation since the incident. Also, no prior sexual encounters in the past 6 months.

2 days have passed since I noticed the redness, and most of the irriation has gone away.
But the redness remains, and it started to look like a small bump. (this could all be anxiety)
I also noticed that my penis feels "colder" than usual. (again, could all be anxiety)

Questions:
1) do you think I have an STD?
2) Since the irritation has subsided, should i just leave it alone??
3) is this just normal irritation/anxeity??
4) would you recommend I need STD testing?

Good grief. If you can't see the difference between that case and yours, I cannot help you.  Re-read the entire thread, including my reply yesterday to christopherneworleans.  This thread is closed; I will delete any further comments.

I know you dont want continuing dialog...but here is an example of the same symptoms I have where you arent so concerned about STD's

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/STD/messages/686.html

I apologize, and realize there is still a risk, but the tone of your initial reply was a a bit alarming to me.

Anyway, wont post on here until I get the results.

Well, I am getting a full panel STD test done today.  Will not urinate 2 hours prior to test.  For those keeping track of this thread, I will post results (will be ready within 3 business days)

It isn't "hard to believe" at all.  Such brief exposure indeed could result in herpes.  You cannot apply post hoc reasoning.  For someone struck by lightning, the risk was low before it happened.  Afterward s/he can say "Boy, I was unlucky"--  but cannot conclude it wasn't lightning after all just because the pre-strike odds were low.

I agree this isn't necessarily herpes, and if it is, you didn't necessarily get it during the brief oral exposure you describe.  The fact that it was low risk has some influence on my judgment, but it's not only factor to consider.

the "bump" is in my urethra.   its not apparant it is a bump, just kinda looks like it.  It is definitly redder than the other side of my urethra.

after reading multiple other posts, I just find it hard to believe that this single episode of 30 second unprotected oral sex could cause herpes.

Most of the other posts similar have indicated a low risk.

Another thing to consider is if you noticed an abnormal redness from maybe a lubrication did by going into your Urethra, you might have been paying lots of attention to it by opening it and touching it and rubbing it etc. making the problem even worse. Not sure what you mean when you say a bump has showed up though. That's what is making me think it could be herpes. A bump under the skin or on top?

in reading some of the other posts, i seem to see Oral exposure as low exposure....  Why is my situation different than some of the others posts with much more graphic symptoms?

Doc..

Obviously not what I wanted to read, but thank you for the advice.

I did speak with a local STD councelor and explained the exact same story.  Not to disagree with you, but the councelor did say for such a brief exposure (30 seconds) and I was the recipent... It is unlikely I caught anything FROM THIS PARTICULAR ENCOUNTER.

You are right in the fact that I may have gotten this from a previous encounter.  (even though my last encounter was over 1 year prior to this incident)

When I meant "normal irritation" I mean due to masturbation or from other forms of activity that would irritate the penile opening.

Doctor,

Thank you for your comment, and I totally agree.  Man, I do need to take a break from this.  Get over it and move on.  Hopefully I can.

Happy holidays and New Year.

Read the question carefully and read each of my and Dr. Hook's replies carefully, and ONLY in relation to the question asked.  The description of symptoms and overall tone of a question make a lot of difference in my interpretation of symptoms and risk.  Often you cannot safely generalize any reply to other apparently similar situations.

Anxious people who hang on every word always can find things that seem to apply to them but do not, and will always find inconsistencies in replies if you look for them.  It is a fool's errand for chronically anxious people to keep reading this or any other online forum.  If you are nervous about STDs and have been spending a lot of time here, I suggest you take a 6 month holiday from the forum.

No ongoing discussion, please.

I have a question about your response Dr., and please do not take offense.  I just want to clarify for myself and many others I am sure who read these posts.  In previous posts regarding unprotected oral sex with the man on the receiving end, you have stated repeatedly that oral sex is generally safe sex, and without discharge, you do not have an STD.  Anxiety is the primary cause of "other symptoms", and to move on from the event.  I can point these posts out if necessary.
In this post, you are saying that this looks more like an STD than anxiety.
Could you, just to put people at ease, clarify what men should be concerned about if they receive unprotected oral and what to be on the lookout for?  It would be extremely helpful.  Thank you in advance Dr. -- if you choose not to continue this thread, I understand.  Like I said, I just think it would be helpful.  Thanks.

An STD certainly is possible.  The timing is a bit late for the oral exposure 3 weeks earlier, but still possible.  Soap and certain sex products (especially spermicides, like those with nonoxynol-9 as the active ingredient) certainly can cause urethral irritation, but more or less immediately, not 3 weeks later.  With your main symptoms being redness/irritation rather than abnormal dishcarge, and with the symptoms clearing up on their own after only a few days, genital herpes seems a pretty good bet.  Specifically, you might have acquired HSV-1 from oral exposure 3 weeks earlier--although as I said above, it's on the late side; most new herpes shows up within 10-14 days.  Or perhaps you have had herpes that goes back to some other exposure and just didn't notice previous symptoms.  Or it could be nongonococcal urethritis, gonorrhea (very unlikely), or syphils (even more unlikely).

The bottom line is that I'm not positive whether there is anything at all, and am unable to come up with any definitive diagnosis.  You need to see a health care provider.  To your specific questions:

1) Possibly, as discussed above.

2, 4) Even though the symptoms have resolved, it would be smart to see a provider experienced in STD.  Your local health department STD clinic would be a good choice.  Whoever you see, try to avoid urinating for several hours before you are examined, since voiding can wash out signs of an infection and make diagnosis more difficult.

3) Your symptoms do not strike me as being due primarily to anxiety.  And I don't think there is anything called "normal irritation" of the urethra.

I hope this helps.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
