i've had adenovirus cultured from my urethra and all others (hsv, gonnor, chlam, etc.) negative. explains a lot. good luck.
Hey men thanks alot. I guess we are in the same foot steps, but we are going to get threw this. Good Luck
came on suddenly (next morning) after sex encounter. i have no sores. just urethra. felt flu that day then mild pain in penis, then escalating burning discomfort next several days. now it's just constant burning irritation, thought it's going down a bit now thank the lord. still on cipro. prostate exam free under our social medical system. urologist sticks his expert fingers up your rear and feels your prostate and then says: your prostate is way swollen and spongy. given your other symptoms you've got textbook acute prostatitis. 3 weeks of cipro then maybe we'll repeat it. antibiotics not really doing a lot so far so who knows...
i had the same thing this week all week. killer burning in urethra all day and night. std tests negative except herpes, the result for which i don't get back for a few more days. went back to clinic several times pleading for help - not in a crazy way mind you. was referred to a urologist and saw him today. after the prostate exam he said good thing i came in - my prostate was swollen, spongy, and clearly infected. prostatitis, apparently, radiating wicked pain to the head of my penis. so i'm on 3 weeks of cipro. i'd spent the week convinced of herpes because of the burn. not that that would be a big deal, but better to have fewer matters to occupy my mind... my thought: maybe a prostate exam?
good luck.
Did your symptoms started out of nowhere. I havent had the prostatis exam, I need to duh. Cause is driving me nuts and three doctors already have toll me that is not herpes related. I believe it too, i dont have no blisters or redness, just burning in the urethra. Day and night like yours.
Like how much thats the prostatis exam cost?
How does it work, like what do they do? Do they take out blood or urine?
Do the antibiotics that they give you really work?
should add that i've had flu symptoms all week, too, really a general malaise, which the urologist said was dead on for acute prostatitis.
I already answered your follow-up questions. See my original reply: "I can't say what started the problem"; "...your continuing discomfort almost certainly does not mean you have an undiagnosed infection"; and "you might just have to learn to live with it."
More antibiotics will make no difference.

From your professional point of view. What do you think cause this burning in the first place? Could it had being from masturbating, or from some bacteria? This burning started out of nowhere. One night i was masturbating and I started to feel a little discomfort on my urethra. The next day I had the swollen penis and trouble urinating. I also felt a little pain on my lower abdomen, with muscle sores.
Do you think that this burning is going to go away by itself or do I need to take more atibiotics? Thaks Doc
Sigh.... from your username, I think I addressed this with you before now (see my response to "handjobwithadifference" below.... But I can't find an earlier thread with your name, so here goes.
I can't say what started the problem or what is causing your continuing symptoms, but you can be certain it isn't an STD--because you really weren't at risk for any important infection, your diagnostic tests were reliably negative, and the treatment you have had would have cleared up any undiagnosed infection of importance.
Whenver a body part is injured, pain or discomfort often persists after healing is complete by all objective measures. Just think how common it is for someone to have a back injury, then persistent back pain; aching in a sprained ankle long after it is healed; or continuing abdominal discomfort after a woman recovers completely from pelvic inflammatory disease. The same applies to genital infections. In other words, your continuing discomfort almost certainly does not mean you have an undiagnosed infection or anything that will ever harm you or a future sex partner. You might just have to learn to live with it.
So to answer your specific questions:
1) Almost certainly not an STD.
2) Doubtful that your diet is the cause. Alcohol definitely not. But if you suspect spicy food is a possibility, lay off the spices for a while and see what happens.
3) This doesn't sound at all like herpes.
4) See above.
5) If not done, you might seek the advice of a mental health professional to assess whether there is an anxiety/emotional component to your symptoms.
Good luck-- HHH, MD
