Not Sure if I have Herpes w/o lesions

On 01/21/08, I had a 1 nightstand, protected & no oral.
1 week after, I spotted. This continued & the discharge got more watery. I also felt the need to pee more frequently. I went to the walkin clinic on 02/11. Dr. saw some secretions. Tested for chlamydia & gonorrhea. Said that it may be an infection, so he gave me Apo-metronidazole
I had my period the week I took the antibiotics, & when my period ended, discharges stopped
Around when my period ended, I started feeling weird pains around my vagina. Nothing unbearable/sharp, but like the pain when you poke a bruise. I feel this pain on my butt andlegs. Not all the time, it comes and goes and not always on the same spot. Sometimes there is slight irritation in my vagina, but it stops after a few minutes. It's been ~6 weeks.
No flu-like symptoms/typical 1st-outbreak painful lesions
Went to the walkin clinic 03/06, cause I noticed a tiny painless bump on my vulva. Said it was most likely a small blocked gland. Took sample anyways. Said I’m (-) for gonorrhea.

03/15, I saw my GP after my period. During my period I felt irritation & 1 evening, I had to pee frequently and there was slight irritation when I did. Said there was some slight inflammation around my vagina. I also found 1 or 2 very tiny bumps near the opening of my vagina. My GP said most likely mucus under skin. Took a sample anyways.  (I’ll get both results by next week). I was still worried, so sent me to a STD specialist.
Saw the specialist on 03/19. Still hadn’t gotten my results for chlamydia. She took sample for general infection & for chlamydia. Said it’s impossible I had herpes, cause 1st episode is very painful w/ blisters. No way that I would feel this pain for so long w/o an outbreak. She also didn’t want blood testing, cause most test (+) & that doesn’t mean it’s genital & it causes unnecessary worry. She sent me for an ultrasound for the pain. Appt is in April. I’ll get the results for infection/chlamydia tm.  Said she diagnoses many herpes cases and I didnt have it & its ruled out.
Is this atypical symptoms? 2nd opinion? Possible to feel this random-bruising pain for this long w/o an outbreak? Should I insist on blood test or is my doctor right about it? I think (+) or (-) for type 2 will tell me whether I have genital herpes. But type 1, I've heard that it's 50/50. Not sure if I want to live w/ that doubt. Should I stop worrying like all the Dr.s said or do I keep going? What else could this be?

Of course it is possible, but your situation isn't the same as in this person's question.  And your symptoms apparently are not due to herpes.  If they were, the Valtrex would have been effective.

No further comments here; this isn't your thread.  If you want more information about it, you'll need to use the Post a Question link to ask a question.

Hi,

I was just recently diagnosed with Herpes Simplex 2. It was confirmed with both a Pap (lab noticed cellular changes) and a serum test. I have had soreness and itching in my vagina.... and itching of my extreme upper-thighs since starting Valtrex (not certain if this is a side-effect or just another symptom of the Herpes). My partner... still waiting on blood tests... is completely asymptomatic, but we both assume he is the carrier.

ANYWAY - :) My reason for posting is both to share that it is possible to have Herpes - and an initial outbreak - without the blister symptom and to ask a question: if I have been confirmed Positive with Herpes, but I am still having symptoms after 10 days on Valtrex (2k mg/day).... have you heard of any other treatments? Either instead of, or in tandem with, Valtrex? My OB says she does not think anything else will help, but I would value an additional opinion.

Oh - one other comment... just getting a sore throat. I hope to -od it is a cold and not the virus presenting in my throat..??? (just paranoia?)

Thanks

Reacting first to the title you chose for this thread, before reading the question itself:  Herpes is either completely asymptomatic or it causes skin lesions. There is not much in between.  Anyone who is having genital sypmtoms, but not blisters or sores, probably doesn't have herpes.  So my guess is that herpes doesn't explain your problem.

Now going on to the question itself. Guess what?  First, you have seen two physicians, including a specialist.  No distant online source, no matter how expert, can compete with direct examination by personal physicians.  Second, I agree exactly with the specialist:  "Said it’s impossible I had herpes, cause 1st episode is very painful w/ blisters. No way that I would feel this pain for so long w/o an outbreak."

In any case, your symptoms really are not typical for herpes herpes. And the specialist's advice about testing for HSV is pretty reasonable.  Basically, she is saying it would make no difference if positive; it would only mean you have asymptomatic herpes plus some other cause of your symptoms. On the other hand, even if it doesn't explain your symptoms, in general it's good for people to know whether or not they have HSV-2.  So you could discuss this again with the specialist.  But don't get your hopes up.

My advice, therefore, is to trust the specialist and follow her advice.  She also is the one to ask about "what else this could be".

Best wishes--- HHH, MD
