Extremely scared about herpes with symptoms

Hello Doctor,

I am extremely worried, scared, and confused right now. On February 21st, I had protected vaginal sex with a SW in Thailand. I waited until April 4th to go to Planned Parenthood to get checked for any possible STD's. My biggest concern was Herpes, which up until that point, I did not show any symptoms. It was not until I arrived that they informed me that they do not check for herpes unless the doctor requests it. I tested negative for all STD's they checked for, but was not checked for Herpes. The next day, I began experiencing a burning sensation on my scrotum. One day it would start on my the left side of my shaft, then I would feel it on my left scrotum, and then on my right scrotum, then, on my right shaft near the base. I began reading this forum and read about genital focused anxiety and false symptoms. That would ease my mind and on some days, I could convince myself that this was in fact the case and tbe burning sensation would stop but would start again sporatically. This was for the first two weeks, the period between April 4th and April 22nd. I started a new job on April 23rd. On this day, I  began to experience intense burning sensations, tingling, a bit of itching, and overall pain on different spots around my penis (left scrotum, right scrotum, base right shaft). This occured on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th. On the evening of the 25th, I read over these forums again and convinced myself that it was genital focused anxiety and felt fine on the 26th, aside from pressure in my left testicle throughout the day. I'm not sure what to think, as I would like to convince myself that this is anxiety caused symptoms. At work, I feel that the symptoms are very overt and I definitely feel them, but these symptoms often subside once I arrive home and feel more relaxed and calm.

Hi Doctor,

A quick question regarding nerves and burning.  I talked to a Doc today that said it was impossible for herpes to effect the nerves in the feet.  However I've read elsewhere that herpes can hurt nerve endings.  Is what this Doctor said true?  Or, more to the point, can herpes cause burning in the the feet?  I asked on this question only because it related to burning.  I had a possible exposure 4 months ago and I was just curious that (if i even have it) if it could have traveled that far.

Thanks!

The aditional information doesn't change my opinion or advice.

Don't I recognize your username?  Apologies if I got it wrong.  But if I didn't, note forum rules:  maximum 2 questions in a 6 month period.

I feel that my scrotum may be more red than usual and I do feel parts of it feel raw and sensitive. I am not sure if that is a sign of herpes or if this is caused by my obsessively examining this area for the past 3 weeks. My symptoms have subsided a bit since yesterday, but I can feel slight burning after I touch a certain areas of my scrotum.

Also, I have been diagnosed with chronic epiditimitis and feel that the pain associated with my epiditimis has been more intense in the last two months. In the past, it was only on my right testicle, but now experience pain on my left testicle on occasion. I need your advice on if this sounds like an initial herpes outbreak. Does herpes affect epiditimitis

Herpes doesn't cause the symptoms you describe.  Period!  Burning and tingling are described as herpes symptoms on lots of herpes websites, those things ONLY occur WITH typical herpes lesions--blister like sores that develop then heal over 10-14 days.  They do not occur by themselves.  And herpes never causes symptoms that last more than 10-14 days.  That's never.  But if you remain so anxious about it, find a provider to do an HSV blood test in about 3 weeks, i.e. 3 months after your Thai adventures.  That's enough time for the test to become positive.

But even if it shows you have HSV-2, it will not mean herpes is the cause of the symptoms you describe.  They are typical for anxiety-related symptoms.

Good luck-- HHH, MD
