Sorry, as I told you, I have nothing more to say until you have a reliable, type-specific test to discuss. Trying to make assessments using other, non-specific tests is not in your best interest. When you do, if it is negative, you do not have HSV-2 and do not need to worry. No further answers untill you have a type-specific test result to discuss. In the meantime I have provided you with information on herpes prevention above. EWH

Thanks for the clarification. Something is wrong here. A HerpeSelect value of greater than 0.9 is consider equivocal and above 1.1 is considered positive. A value of 4.71 is positive. Perhaps you were tested with some other test. I would follow-up on this or have the test repeated.
That you had an outbreak if blisters on your penis is suggestive of having had genital herpes and, if your blood test was positive, you can assume that you have genital HSV-2.
As for your oral ulcers, with a negative blood tests for HSV-1, it is quite reasonable to assume that you do not have HSV-1 and it is also reasonable to assume that what your doctor has identified as canker sores (which are not caused by HSV) are canker sores and not HSV. They can certainly recur in the manner that you describe.
Regarding your forthcoming marriage, the important steps in HSV transmission prevention are: 1. For both members to know if one or both have herpes; 2. Avoidance of sex when lesions are present which is the situation when risk of transmission is greatest; 3. Correct and consistent condom use; and 4. For the person with herpes to take suppressive therapy with antiviral medications. If these steps are taken, transmission of HSV becomes very rare. It may be also worthwhile to ask your wife to have a reliable HSV blood test as well. If she already has HSV-2, there is no reason to be concerned about transmission if, in fact, it turns out that you do have HSV-2.
As you are learning, the topic of herpes is a complex one. The disease is common with HSV-1 being present in over 60% of adults and HSV-2 (the virus which causes most genital herpes) being present in about 1 in 5 Americans. For both infections, the majority of people who have the infections are not aware that they are infected, either because they either acquired it without knowing in the past or because they misidentified their herpes as something else. I will do my best to answer your questions but in general, many of these questions and information about herpes can be obtained by accessing excellent informational web sites such as the one run by the American Social Health Association (disclosure, Dr. Handsfield and I are both on the Board of Directors of ASHA).
I hope these comments are helpful to you. I realize questions remain for you but it will be very hard for me to give you further advice until you have clarified the results of your testing. Take care. EWH

Welcome to our Forum. I am a bit confused by your question. You indicate that you HerpeSelect HSV-2 specific antibody test result was 4.72 which is a value which is almost certainly indicative of the fact that you have acquired HSV-2 at some point in the past but you also state that you were "checked for hsv-1 and -2 with the HerpeSelect test and the result was negative. Can you clarify this for me. If your HerpeSelect result for HSV-2 was 4.72, that is a positive result. After I have your clarification I will provide more information. EWH
