Help! After reading some of the posting regarding interpretation of test result for HSV II, I am totally confused. According to my Gyn, I tested positive for HSVII in November 2005. I've known for more than 30 years that I was exposed to HSV. Up until now, I have never had a specific diagnosis as to whether I have HSVI or HSVII.
From what I can tell from the lab sheet, I did not have a HerpesSelect test. My results are listed as follows:
HERPES TYPE 2, IgM
Normal Ranges:
**negative samples < or=0.90
**positive samples > or = 1.10
**equivocal (borderline) 0.91 - 1.09
Out of Range
0.94 H
Units
OD Ratio (or=0.90)
Can you please help me understand these results. I need to know what I'm dealing with before I start sharing my results.

Herpes IgM results are totally and absolutely unreliable; they mean nothing. They should not be on the market.
That said, the numbers you provide are more suggestive of a HerpeSelect IgG test. If that's what it really was, the result of 0.94 almost certainly is truly negative, even though it's technically in the low end of hte equivocal range.
Tell your provider you want a HerpeSelect test for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibody. Disregard any and all other HSV blood test results, and do not share your current results with anyone or draw any conclusion from them, either for or against HSV-2 infection. For further information, search the STD Forum threads using search terms "IgM", "herpes diagnosis", and "HerpeSelect test".

Thank you so very much. I am being retested on Friday. I have requested the HerpeSelect test. I basically told my Gyn that he has no choice in the matter re type of blood test. He is claiming that the blood used was and is reliable. I explained to him that it was my choice to request a retested based on high ratio of false positives results. I tried to express to him that I was not challenging his medical expertise, but rather seeking a greater understanding. I need to know whether I'm infected with either 1 or 2 because my outbreaks are few and far in between.

hsv 1 1.34 positve
hsv 2 0.9 negative
one month after the result I tested for chymida it came out to be negative. If they made a mistake on one exam it possible they could of made a mistake on the hsv 1 exam .34 is the reason why I tested postive base on their standards doctors or someone with knowledge what should I do. all that ever happen A
girl who I think had herpes touched her sore and shook my hand. also I used my roomate towel by a mistake. I took the exam today for hsv 1 alone to confirm if I have the virus or not. well I don't have coldsores but I do have a button on my lips and my lips need a lot of chap stick..do you think I would be clear on the next exam.

doctor I wish you could answer my question it my first time on your site. the likely hood i have herpes is high.although with god there is hope. am at a 50/50 chance i have that virus but I think that am 90% that I have it. I already have my mind set as positive
do we consider hsv 1 as an std if you could catch it by simply kissing someone.
