Trichomoniasis

Is it possible to contract trich by mutual masturbation, or coming in contact with a towel, sheets , or toilet.
I had a massage at massage parlor that involved mutual masturbation and one in a while i have minor discomfort after i urinate. I have read conflicting information and im wondering if you can contract by mutual masturbation. Some sites say you can some dont list it as a risk.

I'm also wondering if you can contract by coming in contact with a towel , sheets, or toilet, it says the parasite lives 45 minutes outside the body. I appreciate your clarification.

I should have also said that some experts belief that rare cases of trich in women might be self-infections with different strains of trichomonas.  Trich-like parasites are normal in the large intestine, and in theory local contamination of the vaginal area could result in a vaginal infection, maybe explaining some infections in women who didn't acquire it sexually.  But this is controversial, and if it occurs at all, it is rare.

Welcome to the STD forum.

Trichomonas is one of those STDs that throughout history were often thought to be transmitted by nonsexual means, like toilet seats, towels, shared bathing suits or other intimate clothing, and that sort of things.  It was never the case.  Such beliefs once were common because trich often showed up in women who were obviously not at risk for STD, at least not recently.  We now know that women can carry trich for many years, and have it show up at a time they are monogamous or not sexually active.  But you can still find stories about nonsexual transmission, especially on the web.  However, you will not find any information like that on responsible, medically knowledgeable websites.  All knowledgeable agencies know that vaginal intercourse explains virtually all (if not truly all) cases.

As for quasi-sexual exposures like mutual masturbation, it is conceivable this could account for rare cases.  However, that probably could only occur for women who acquire vaginal infection.  I cannot imagine a male acquiring trich by hand-genital contact.

I am unaware of any data on survival of trichomonas outside the body; 45 minutes sounds like someone's guess, nothing more.  But regardless of that, it is not transmitted other than by unprotected penile-vaginal (or mabe penile-anal) intercourse.

I hope that helps.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
