Oral HSV-1 is rarely if ever sexually acquired. Think of HSV-1 as sexually transMISSIBLE but usually not sexually transMITTED. Basically, HSV-1 is an STD only when transmitted to someone's genitals by oral sex.

You are correct: about half the population is infected with HSV-1 and has a positive blood test for it, generally acquired in childhood, usually without recognized recurrent oral herpes or other symptoms. That's the best bet in your case. You probably don't need to worry about transmitting the infection to anyone, sexually or by any other contact, unless you develop symptomatic outbreaks, such as cold sores (also called fever blisters). In that case, don't kiss anybody (on any body part, to use "kiss" in its broadest sense) until the sores heal. Otherwise, forget about it.
Why is there no cure? Viruses are hard to cure; there are very few viral illnesses that can be eradicated with known therapy. Vaccines against HSV are an important research goal, and an experimental vaccine against HSV-2 currently is in expanded clinical trials. However, it is not expected to be highly effective, based on earlier research. To my knowledge, nobody is even working on vaccines against HSV-1. It's too mild a disease to be worth the time and expense.
You are off the charts in your response to your test result. Almost nobody in my experience gets as concerned about it as you seem to be.
Bottom line: Put this out of your mind. You and I and the rest of majority of Americans who are infected (and the 90+% in some countries) are the more normal ones.
Good luck-- HHH, MD
Over 60% of adults in the US have hsv1 orally. Only 20-40% of them EVER get a noticeable cold sore. It's very common but no one ever likes to get a noticeable cold sore on their lips so yes it can be distressing to find out that you have hsv1 - just don't obsess over it - it's far too common of a virus to take up a lot of your time. It's best transmitted thru direct skin on skin contact. A good smooch is the most common way. You can also transmit it to the genital area thru performing oral sex on someone who doesn't already have hsv1 orally.
Dry lips could be many things - a cold sore healing, dry, chapped skin or even another infection . Keep your lips moist all the time to keep them from cracking even more. Aveeno makes a new cold sore ointment for lips that has propolis in which is good for herpes healing and also for other skin problems. It's under $10. Good ole vaseline is good too though a little thick and gooey.
If your lips don't improve after a week of keeping them frequently moisturized see your doctor to rule out other causes of your symptoms like fungus etc.

thanks a lot doctor and the ones that responded to the post. I can sleep at night better known am not the only one infected. I am just going to have to take it one day at a time.
Chris Rock said it best as to why nobody is curing viruses, they're still mad about the money they lost from curing polio.
I think you're way overstressing. Not only do most people have HSV1 orally, but it's not even a STD. From what I've read, most people contract it in childhood/early teens.

Has no one else read up on it besides me? Copper ions kills the herpes virus. But they only put it topical, dynamiclear. We need to be giving shots of this so it gets rid of it for GOOD! I have it on my genitals and I'm personally pissed. A person knows when they have a cold sore and that person should have stopped himself and said, "oh, I don't think this is a good idea." Would he want herpes. I had a cold sore and had the chance to give this exact same guy genital herpes even after I knew I had it. But did I? Nope. Doctors have a cure it just depends how far you're willing to throw your money.
