small areas of redness!?

Hi there,

While out shopping last night I began to feel an itch in my groin. After about 20minutes I noticed numerous(about 10/15, that were seperate from each other and different shapes) small patches of red in my groin. They are localised to my pubic hair area and stop before the base of my penis. There are no areas on my shaft, foreskin or under my foreskin. I kept an eye on the redness and by the morning most of the redness had subsided, although there were still some patches noticeable under light. The itching stopeed an hour or so after I came home and has not begun again. The red patches are still faint now but some still there. The small patches do not have any broken skin, ulceration or papules/nodule like features. I do not have any other signs or symptoms including swollen lymph nodes, pain, tingling or dysuria.

I recently broke up with my long term partner and had vaginal sex just over 3 weeks ago. We did not use any protection.

I would like to ask if this could be an primary outbreak of herpes!? Would herpes causes this? If it were symptomatic HSV, would the rash/redness get better like this? Could it be an irritation?

Ive never had anything like this before, I regulary check myself and yearly go to the STD clinic.

Thank you

This still doesn't sound like any STD. Don't assume an STD just because the rash is somewhat near your genital area.  Any of the many causes of skin rash anywhere on the body sometimes can involve the genitals.  You'll need to look for other causes.

Thank you for your response. This is a great resource for people and it is very well put together and maintained.

I have a couple of counter questions to your response and then I will leave you too those who need you more.

Just to clarify the red or small areas of erythema I had, were never raised, just differing degrees of red skin with no urticaria appearence or papules!
It has been just over a day now and the redness has pretty much gone as far as I can see.....There's been a lot of checking!

I just wanted to ask:

Could this be an atypical presentation/manifestation? But I have read that when herpes does present it's signs and symptoms are pretty typical and clinically easy to recognise?

Thank you for you time

Welcome to the forum.  Congratulations for an obviously responsible attitude toward STDs.  I wish all sexually active men and women got STD tested once a year!

Bottom onine:  I very much doubt you have herpes or any other STD.

On one hand, you are right to raise the possibility of herpes, the only STD that could cause inflamed red bumps and the only STD that is a possible explanation for your symptoms.  On the other hand, herpes rarely starts in the hair-bearing areas like the pubic area.  To initiate an infection, the herpes virus usually has to be massaged into the tissues, so the first lesions usually are where there is maximum friction during sex -- in men, that almost always means the penis itself.  My guess is that this is a non-STD problem, most likely an allergic reaction or some other dermatitis.

If the problem persists, get it checked out professionally.  But I very much doubt you have herpes.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
