The average flow is about four or five days.  Some women have a slight pause for a day at about day 3 and then the period comes back for a couple of days.  Like any average, women's individual experience will vary, and periods can get shorter or lighter over the years, as the woman comes up on perimenopause.  If your periods are longer than 9 or 10 days, I would certainly see a doctor.  Sometimes if a woman has a fibroid in the uterus, it can make her bleed almost all the time.
