Hi KK99.
Your Mom's melanoma sounds a bit like mine, so I can at least tell you a bit of what happened on my side of the story. Mine was a mole that I'd had forever...years and years that seemed to be looking a little purple to me, so I asked my dermatologist...we biopsied it, and yup, melanoma. I went to have it cut out and prior to cutting it out they injected a dye into my arm to see if any melanoma had reached my lymph nodes, and yup, it had. So they took the mole out...cut deep and wide to get it all, and they took out 21 lymph nodes too so they could send them to the lab to be checked for melanoma. The lymph nodes did not contain melanoma except for that very first one...the sentinel lymph node. So...then they put me on a daily infusion of Interferon...which is a manmade cancer killer, and I had the infusion every single day for a month.  It wasn't chemotherapy...it's the same idea, but different stuff.
Then I had to go for an Interferon shot 3 times a week for a whole year. I went every single time...didn't miss a day, for a whole year. Interferon is in itself, a sort of poison, but it is supposed to kill cancer cells.  It's like a little pac-man. I am now at the point of going to check in with my oncologist every 3 months. So far, so good.
So...if your mom's oncologist DOES NOT mention the possibility of Interferon treatment, tell her to at least suggest it to her doctor and see what he says.
Interferon can make you feel like ****...but so can chemo, and so can cancer...so... tell your mom I'm thinking of her and wishing her the best.  I'm 54 and that's my story in a nutshell.  Keep me posted.

I hope someone comes along with better information but from what I know, I think your mom's prognosis at this point depends less upon the size of the tumor and more on where the cancer has spread.   Hopefully it's in locations that are treatable.  Your mom probably has a long road ahead of her but I'm sure she's a fighter and the will to live is so important.
