Try taking 500 mg. of vitamin B5 daily (it is a mucus thinner and an anti-inflammatory). I also take mullein extract and a moderate amount of vitamin C (both anti-inflammatories). You might also rinse your nose with salt water before go to bed. All these things have no side effects, whereas medications do. For me it works.
I'm quite the opposite, I sleep far too much. I have had some sinus issues in the past though. Mine, however, turned out to be allergy related. Still, I can pass on some of the information I explored.
Apparantly, a thick build up of mucus can be caused due to the lack of ample fluids. Your diet can also be a cause, with certain foods aiding in its production. If you smoke, and the mucus is grey/brownish, then that would be your problem.
It may even turn out to be an environmental issue as mine did. Do you have less trouble when going on holiday, etc? If that's the case then it might be something in the home thats causing it.
Finally, there's athsma, which ties in with environmental causes. Athsma not only causes respitory issues but usually goes hand in hand with dust/mite allergies, making the mattress itself a possible cause.
I hope this helps.
