Hello and hope you are doing well.
In the initial phases of the sleep cycle and while awakening, we tend to be more conscious or alert. If we study the brain waves at these phases they tend to show the alert wave pattern, this could cause the awareness.
Follow good sleep hygiene measures like going to bed at the same time, waking up at the same time, avoidance of alcohol, smoking and caffeinated beverages. Maintain warm, comfortable bedroom environment and engage in relaxing activities like a warm bath before bed time. This will help to reduce the occurrence of these episodes.
If it persists or is troublesome consult your doctor for assessment.
Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Do you feel as though you are awake but that your body is paralyzed?
That is the impression I'm getting from your post, as you say that it feels as though you are awake yet asleep at the same time.
I often feel as though I'm awake, but my body won't respond...I get really scared when this happens, and I try to force my body to sit up...and it won't.
I can't talk or cry out when this happens either. All I can do is lay there and hope that I don't die. It's terrifying.
The good news is that this is a rather common condition. ( If this is the type of thing that you are experiencing)
Your body goes through different "modes" or "cycles" during rest.
When you begin to fall into a deep sleep your body sort of shuts itself down...it becomes "paralyzed" for lack of a better word. This is to ensure that your body is getting the rest that it needs.
Sometimes your brain will wake up, but your body is still stuck in sleep mode. They aren't sure why this happens to some of us, but ( except for being scared) there is nothing to worry about. It is not a life threatening condition.
They have found that this happens more to people when they are experiencing higher volumes of stress, anxiety, or depression, but the results are inconclusive...which is to say, that you don't have to be going through any of those in order for this to happen.
Another possibility is a sleep disorder known as narcolepsy...with narcolepsy you tend to fall asleep at any time of day or night...you could be shopping, and as you reach for a can of soup you could literally fall asleep. With narcolepsy, when you awaken you don't realize that you've been asleep and you will carry on a conversation from exactly where you left off, or will continue on with the task you were doing before the attack happened.
Hope some of this information helped a bit.
Please keep us updated, and see a doctor who can confirm what it is you are experiencing.
