I just had to comment, I came across this discussion trying to find out why I have a recurring "dream" of seeing someone standing beside my bed staring at me. I am a perfectly healthy 28yr old, and have been having this problem since I was about 15. I have often just thought that I would hallucinate while I was half asleep, half awake. I will often see bugs, and have swated at and tryed to squash things that werent there. I have woken my ex-husband up thinking there was a huge bug on the wall. I will stare at them and finally realize there is nothing there. More commonly and most frightening is seeing people standing beside my bed staring at me. They never try to grab at me, they are always just there staring at me. Usually the vision goes away after I start screaming, but once it stayed and I seriously thought someone was in my room and was out of the bed trying to get away before the vision went away. I was looking this up, because I had another one last night and I ended up throwing stuff at this one because it took awhile to go to bed. This is very disturbing to me, because my young son was in the bed with me and I scared him to death. I have long thought it was night terrors, but from my understanding people with those appear to still be asleep, are hard to wake up, and have actual dreams. I dont really consider these dreams so much as hallucinations. I'm really just glad to hear that I'm not the only one out there. Not that I wish this on anyone, but I'm relieved. I have thought I was just crazy, and had some family members that wanted me to see a medium.
As an add on to the one that thinks it could be due to high EMF's, I have had episodes in various locations.
Dan, I am sorry that you suffer this horrible problem. To end all this try sleeping with a light on, not a night light it does not give off enough light.
My husband bought me a special switch like a dimmer switch on the wall, but it goes on a lamp, so you can adjust the brightness.
I like to sleep in a dark room, but I've been tormented by this so much that I do have to sleep with a light on. You do not see things in brighter light, only in very dim light. so keep the lamp on moderate low light, and if you still see things brighten it just a bit until you get the results that you need. no visions.
I have heard this runs in families and now I know it is true because my son who is 43 just started having the sleep paralysis, and that is how my symptoms started many years ago.
Try reading up on sleep disorders, especially Narcolepsy. I believe what we are experiencing is Narcolepsy, and I did have a diagnosis for narcolepsy years ago, but with my complex brain problems my doctor has moved onto other things, but anyone can have more than one disorder. Narcolepsy is not life threatening as far as I know, but it is very annoying, and I believe there is medicine that can help. it this continues please see a sleep specialist, or a neurologist.
Oh by the say I also heard footsteps coming toward my room too, some people do have the sound effects with it, but most people just have the visions. other can also smell thing, I believe it effects all of the senses.
Hope you get well soon.

Hi there. It is strange that every one of you are women. I'm a 26 year old man and I found this site after searching because of my experiences these past 2 nights. I have not seen spiders, just black shadows, white shadows, people, and shapes. Each night I have found it hard to fall asleep and then about an hour after dozing off I start waking up repeatedly with a sort of "shocked" feeling accompanied by visions of presences in my room. The first night I kept seeing black figures outside my door and in my bathroom. Then last night things got more intense when I woke up to figures around my bed. My daughter had come in our room and was sleeping next to my wife on her side. I woke up with that "shocked" feeling and as I opened my eyes a saw a white shadowy figure standing beside my 2 year old looking down at her as she slept. I instinctively sat up and swung at it with my arm and then fell back down and was right back asleep. This is so bizarre and I'm happy that I'm not alone because it's not ok to wonder if you are crazy you know? I've also heard sounds like footsteps and things scraping the walls. When I think back on the night before its confusing cause its like remembering it as a dream but at the time i was awake and conscious, just so confused as to what was happening! Hopefully this will go away i'm soooo sleepy....By the way I do not have low blood pressure, I eat healthy, exercise daily. I have noticed, however, that each morning after these "episodes" I have woken with a pretty intense headache. Anyone else with this symptom?
So glad I found this site. I have been having the spider/insect phenomena after my mother died about 7 years ago. The spiders/bugs will jump at me and then I see a flash of color orbs, of course I end up screaming and bolting out of the room. My husband thinks I am a fruit loop, lol. I used to think it was my mom messing with me. But I dont think she would be that cruel. Sometimes when I am waking up I hear her voice call my name. Here lately I have been seeing a shadow when I am alone at night in bed whiz past the bed. I have also seen a small boy hovering at the bedroom door, first glance I thought it was my son, it wasnt. I have had the sleep paralysis(if that is what its called) I was pregnant with my third child and couldnt breath, and saw a black hovering mass over me, and I thought please forgive me for all of my sins, couldnt speak or breathe. Of course I had him two days later. Its very unnerving.
OK my doctor said I am not crazy but the brain does strange thing.I have had several MRI scan that shows many legions on my brain. The doctor is still trying to find out what is causing these injuries on my brain, but for now I have been diagnosed with MS. I have also been hospitalized many times when a psychiatrist thought I was crazy. I do not trust psychiatrist to this day. these visions are real, and I am not crazy! I have been in the past diagnosed with Narcolepsy. and am at present seeing a sleep specialist.
This all started out seeing spiders about 6 years ago. I am 65 now. I would be awake, but just woke up, yet still wide awake. I would see spiders, so real I would scream and jump out of bed tearing the bed apart and would not get back into it until I changed the sheets, or was sure the spider was gone. I never found the spider.
I see many other things too. I have seen our dog with her front paws up on my bed and she was just looking at me. I reached out and spoke to her and touched her but when I touched her she disappeared.I looked over in her bed and she was lying there sound asleep. I have seen other animals like a tiger, and when I reached out and touched it, it slowly moved backwards and turned into our fireplace. I have seen the ceiling fan in it's rightful position, but with two extra blades off to each side, and a bit lower then the fan itself. I have seen pictures on the wall, but they would be like 6 inches from my face, and could put my hand behind it and I could see my hand through it. I could close my eyes and re open them and the thing would still be there. but if I touched it, it would slowly move back to it's position on the wall. Again my neurologist, that I finally got brave enough to talk to about it, said I was not crazy, but it was something happening in my brain, like a slow delay from my brain to my eyes. I have a special eye test that proved he was right on that one. This happens so often that my husband bought me a dimmer switch to put on my lamp so the light never goes all the way off. I see it in a dim light, but not in a bright light. Just last week I woke up seeing thousands of tiny black spots. I got up and went into the next room where the light was brighter, and I could only slightly see the spots, but it was like looking through a thick fog. just last night I seen a spider web, I normally would have been afraid, but after seeing things for so long and talking to my neurologist about it, I am not afraid of these things. I reached out and touched the spider web and it disappeared but parts of it were stuck on all my fingers just like a real spider web would be. My Neurologist is sending me for more eye evaluations.
Sweet Judy
I also have had some wierd experiences. A few months ago I saw a man walk over to the side of my bed, I thought it was my husband but, when I sat up and screamed, as I realised it wasn't, it vanished with sparkle of light. Lasdt night I went to sleep and awoke to see a small hooded figure on the bed, I thought it was a burglar so I sat up and shouted "Go away and get out" it turned and ran towards the door and vanished.
I was very shaken and slept with the light on as I was alone.
It seemed so very real although I know it cannot be.
