health after quitting smoking

I have heard from several people that after quitting smoking they feel worse than when they smoked.  What I was told is that they have trouble breathing a few months after, and upon exersion is even worse.  Also you catch every virus that comes along.  Is this true, and if so, will vitamins help this problem, such as, zinc, Vitamins c, b, e, and cod liver oil?

I am more worried about the illnesses after quitting than I am about actually quitting!

Please help to ease the anxiety im feeling about it.. and how do I deal with the breathing problems if they arise?

Thank you

Hi:

Thanks for the new information you posted.  I have been taking 1500 of vitamin c daily and when fall comes i will take 2000 for the winter.  I do love onions and garlic, so that wont be a problem.

I noticed u mentioned probiotics, and I am actually taking acidophilus once a day as well.

Another thing im taking is Cod liver oil, its supposed to help build your immune system.

I will have to check out the magnesium oil and the spirulina.  Thanks again for your help.  Tomorrow I will be one week smoke free, although I am using the patch to get me through the first few weeks.

God bless..........

i could say a lot, but for now, i'll say this MAGNESIUM OIL"  look it up.  it will immensely help uyour crvings, mental well being and physical well being.  also, lots of (and i mean lots) vitamin C, galic (the real stuff, onions and the spice tumeric.

spirulina is great to get the bad stuff out and give you super nutrition.  aslo good probiotic

Exclude dairy, or as much of it as you can.

ther is somuch more you could do, but thse are the best and easiest and least expensive ways to get huge benefits.

Hi:  I am so happy to hear that he is doing so well.  It gives everyone hope and something to look forward too.  They do say just to keep exercising and I've heard that for those that unfortunately get COPD, the best thing they can do is exercise to help, so he is definetely doing the right thing.

Hats off to him!!  Keep up the good work!

Cheers.......Jojo

My boyfriend quit a year ago after smoking for 10 years.  He has never felt better.  And he rarely gets sick.  Even if I have a cold he usually never catches it.  So I know it's not more common for him.  The only issue he has is he still doesn't quite have his lung capacity back.  He gets worn out quickly when running.  It's getting better though and his lungs feel better every day.

Hi:  LOL  I'm off to get some peppermint tea tomorrow as well!  Taking all these things to help in the first year after quitting.

We will have to keep in touch to see how these things are all working, and helping one another seems like were not all doing this alone.

Have a good day!

I just learnt something today and wanted to share it with you incase anyone seems to get these symptoms.  Peppermint tea is great for clearing out the lungs if anyone is having any respitory problems, and also the B vitamins are good for to keep a healthy thyroid whether it is underactive or overactive.

I've researched and found that alot of folks seem to have problems with their thyroid after quitting so wanted to give everyone the heads up just incase this happens to anyone.  The B vitamins seem to help level it out so that problems would be minimal.

Toodles!

Hi Terry:  My husbands name is terry!  LOL  Anyway just wanted to mention that I've just learnt that aloe vera juice is good for allergies, and also Cod Liver oil.  At least now a days you can get those in capsule form, instead of having to take the liquid.  Makes it alot more tolerable.  Also the Cod liver oil helps to renew healthy cells which I think is a great idea!  Just thought I would pass that along.

Hope you and your husband both do well!

Hi there:

I have heard that the first year is really the worst if there is going to be any problems, and after that your on your way, so your half way through then!  I do agree with you, that it gets frustrating to be sick all the time, especially when we quit just to get healthy.  Seems kind of ironic, LOL, but it sound like we have to plough thru the mountain to get to the other side.

Congrats on your 6 months also!

Hi kathy:  I have allergies also, pollen in the spring, and ragweed in the fall.  Usually it seems to affect my ears more than anything else, and the odd sinus headache but nothing serious.  That I can deal with, I guess im more concerned with dealing with breathing issues.  I guess I will have to take my chances and if I continue with vitamins to build up my immune system, then hopefully things wont be so bad.  I have smoked for about 35 years roughly, about a half a pack a day, but if you can do it, then I hopefully can to.

Thank you for the kind words!  God bless and congratulations to you for quitting!

yes me too. I had 2  or 3 cold and a sinus infection in the 6 months since I've quit . Now I feel fine and hope to continue. It's very distrssing to get sick more after quitting but I hope it's just a phase.

Everyone reacts differently to a quit. When I first did, I had a lot of different problems....2 sinus infections and bronchitis in a 4 month period, but there were a a half dozen others who quit at the same time as me and non of them had any health issues.
My illnesses could have been a reaction to allergens as well as being suseptible to sinus infections so I wouldn't blame it on the quit, rather blamed it on the time of year.
My breathing immediately improved and within 6 months I was able to jog for 8 minutes straight. This is almost unheard of given that I smoked about 40 years! Also, the circulation returned to my fingers and toes as well as my tastebuds and sense of smell increasing. There was absolutely not 1 thing that I regret with my quit......only gains, no losses : )

I got my freedom and self respect back, take back yours : )
