computer program for speech?

My 80+ year old mother was diagnosed with aphasia two years ago which has progressed steadily.  Her ability to communicate is almost gone.  Is there some computer program which will talk for you?  I am hoping to hear about some point-and-click program as she doesn't know how to type.

As a student of Speech Language Pathology I can say what you are referring to is called Augmentative/Alternative Communication devices (AAC). Yes, there are many different types available. They rage from very simple and inexpensive, to more complex and very expensive.

Does you mother have insurance? If so, I would recommend that you take her in for an evaluation with an SLP. Post evaluation they will be able to suggest possible AAC devices that would benefit her. I think some insurance companies will cover around 20 sessions with an SLP per year.

Good luck to you and your mother.
