recovery after massive stroke

My 59 year old (otherwise healthy) mother had a right side brain stroke two weeks ago. The DR. said it was prety massive on most of the right side, leaving her unable to move her left side.  She is able to talk, eat, drink, and able to answer any question. (still not completely normal in thinking and talking, but really close.)
She started a live-in rehab last thursday (3 days ago) and now can move her left leg some.  Stil no movement of the arm.  She does have the neglect of the left side. my question(s)
1.  How long does the brain swelling take to go completely away?
2.  Well the neglect she has get better?
3.  Well she be able to walk and move her arm, and if so how long with rehab will that take?

How I so empathize with your severe problems with the nursing home.  You should report the aide who hit your mother to the management.  If they don't fire the aide, then you should report them to a State Board which regulates nursing homes.  I don't know what CNA means, but again, your mother should never be refused food and again you should report it.  I had terrible problems where my mother was.  I finally found out about a hospice place which costs more money but relieved my sense of mind so much.  I would try to find a better place to save your mother's peace of mind and your sanity.  Good luck.

IMy mother was fine and went it for a routine endo test.  She came out of it and had a stroke.  The Dr, and nurses in the hospital ALL missed the stroke signs and did not treat her for a stroke until 4 and 1/2 hours later.  They told her to go home and sleep off the med.  SHe could not stand up, was slurring, complained of head hurting.....  My sisters and I take care of my mom who had 3 massive strokes and is now in a nursing home.  SHe knows what is going on and has a great memory.  SHe was physically hit by an aide that works at the nursing home because she was "crying"  We have been through hell and back and last week the CNA was refusing to give her more food. I am at the nursing home 1-13 times a day checking on my mom and spending time with her.
My dad is 6 and he still at home but I go every day to take care of him.
That is the life I have now and I love the time I spend with them.  I wish I had more help and that we could turn back the time two tears and go on vacation.  Cherish the time you have with your mom or dad.

Hi Alene,
I just read your post dated on 2008. My husband had a stroke last year when he was 49. Now is almost 1 and 1/2 years, he still can not open and close his right hand. I would like to know that after 4 years is your husband much better? His physical ability is much improved. My husband's recover speed seems slow. Right now he can walk with cane with short distance for about15 mins.  Can you email me back? Thanks.

i am 61 female moderately active, normal weight and non-smoker and have recently had two tia which both affected only the left eye. monocular losss of vision - it received no input  signals at all, a blackness, the firat time it happened .  and thanks to the internet sites like this i knew i had an increased chance of a stroke that it was most likely the carotid artery blocked and to go asap to GP.. So i could tell GP not an eye problem but that it was an increased likelihood of stroke and to refer upwards to cosultant and stroke clinic asap. As expectd another tia  ten days later.. apart from bp tablet also prescribed  a blood thinning daily tablet safer than aspirin; cholesterol to be monitored and keep bp to 135/85  ok for now. god bless you all.
